First Time Scores

Interesting (Aug. submit) ASTB

The first time I took the ASTB, I was taking it to get an OCS Billet to BUD/S. My scores were 56, 5/4/5.

After I didn't get selected for BUD/S, my recruiter said they needed pilots. That was a month ago. So I started studying hard for the ASTB, especially the parts important to pilot aptitude. Using the practice tests in the study books, and an excel formula file I found on this website that turns your raw scores into the actual scores, I was scoring 56+, 7/9/8. Then I took the actual ASTB my 2nd time yesterday to send my package for SNA for the Aug board. My scores were 50, 5/6/6.

My recruiter said 6s were the magic number, and that rarely do applicants he sees score in the 6s.

But I was a little baffled at my lack of improvement in spite hard pilot studying, drop in OAR, etc.

I share this with all of you to examine the reality of this test. The formula for scoring the test is suposedly secret, and it's tough to tell what really goes into the scores so that you can manipulate them.

I just found it a little funny that my PFAR only went up 2 points after a month of studying; and I could get perfect Spat. App. scores on all the practice tests.

I wonder if anyone is as perplexed by this whole thing as me. I see people on here who are engineering students scoring in the 5s and people who are art majors scoring in the 8s and 9s.

My package is up, and outside of the scores, it is very strong. But at any rate, I hope these scores cut it, and I hope that the rest of you all taking it soon don't leave feeling like your work and studying didn't pay off.

P.S. For those of you who havne't taken the ASTB yet, the books outline of the test is very wrong!

I've only taken the Computer version, but here is some insight:

Books say: Math/Verbal 37 questions
Mech Comp 30
Spat App 30
Av/Naut 30

The real test: (From what I recall)

Math 30 questions
Reading 25
Mec Com 30
Sp App 25
ANI 30
Aviation Supplemental Test 34 Questions!

So the test is much longer than the books say, and the ANI is much more picky than what the books present.

That's not to say that the books aren't the best help you can find, though. They just aren't as good/accurate as they should be for the cost.

As for the "Engineering" vs "Art" background, I would bet that a lot of weight is put into the reading comprehension sections. having a logical mind is not the same as having an analytical mind. The two together is always a plus in any case.
