The reason people with instrument tickets tend to do well, is NOT the instrument training. It is all the time they have in the aircraft, built up after a FEW years of flying. It makes them more comfortable and raises their SA since the flying part is already second nature.

You will NOT get to that level in the short time you are talking about, even if you do a quick ppl and instrument ticket. PPL is not that many hrs and the instrument ticket is not many more.

SAVE YOUR MONEY! I can not emphasize this enough. YOu want an edge, go buy an IFR (less than 50 bucks) book and learn how to read the plates, and get an idea of what it all means. That is the hard part of RI's, not the flying.
Alright, you guys win :) I am giving up. Do what you want, but people with PPL and Instrument ratings did better than the students with 25 hours of flight time. Some instructors have had onwings who with no prior flight time ended up getting 70+ NSS... That's it, I give up :icon_mi_1

Thanks alot for all the insight. I have already been selected for air and already have my ppl, actually just got it. The reason I asked about math is because I am a physiology major and there was not much math required. Thanks for all the help. Ask for the instrument don't know what I will do with that yet im already 4500 dollars in the hole because of the ppl.

I know of a certain Embry Riddle grad that had like 500 hours total time, Commercial/Multi/Instrument rating that BARELY made it out of primary and attrited from helo land. Way to represent :icon_smil

I know we've discussed this before, if those 500 hour types couldn't make it through, they weren't going to make it through regardless. I'm of the opinion that flight time helps, mostly a lot of flight time. Yet it's absolutely not required to do well. Some people were simply meant to be aviators and some are simply hard workers. Navy flight school isn't that difficult. Memorization, some hand eye coordination and dedication is probably key to making it through. Elective classes aren't going to help in this regard. Flight school should be nothing but a good time. I had a great time, mostly due to the partying and drinking when not flying but if it's something you've always wanted to do, it's going to be a good time.

Your physiology degree will help a lot. The hardest part of flight school is making sure your uniforms don't shrink in the closet. U know all that boozin and eatin out takes a toll on the belly! Sounds like you know all about that though, so you may be able to prevent your closet from shrinking your uniforms.

You aint kidding about the uniform shrinkage. Something about A-pool makes your closet shrink them even faster.

Apool??? you got time to work out LOL...jk... wait until you are in the "wakeup, brief, fly, study for a long time, too tired to work out, go to bed," phase for a couple of weeks at a time.

If you have a pilot slot already, then you don't need to take any math classes :) It looks like the Navy wants you just the way you are...

hey all I'm new to the airwarriors, but I believe that flight time gives you a tremendous advantage over someone who has never flown before. I also think that it depends on the person, yes there are some that are good sticks and can handle the pace, and there are those that could benefit from some actual experience. In the end it all boils down to how bad you want it, if you want it bad enough then it won't matter how much flt time you have.
