Flying for the Marine Corps

This is probably in the wrong section, but I figured I would post here since I am going in as a reservist and doing the mustang route.

I recently enlisted in the Corp, scored a 93 on the ASVAB so I passed that part of getting closer to a flight position, now for the rest...

The OSO for Seattle suggested I take the ASTB now before I graduate high school. My math skills are definitely not as sharp as they could be should I take his advice or study up and push it out until I can no more?

I'm also worried about vision. My uncle went through NROTC, planning to become a naval aviator the whole time. Then when it came time to enter his MOS, his vision was too far gone to become one. I've got 20/20 but am afraid of losing it as well as my shot at becoming a Marine pilot.

Thanks,
Brett

Your OSO wants you to go Officer as much as you do. If you take it now and pass, all the better. If you don't pass, you can take it again in a couple of months.

In a couple months I'll be in boot camp. How many times can you re-take the ASTB?

3 times. There is a minimum between test taking times also. It's been a while since I had done PTAD duty with my OSO, but I believe you have to wait 6 months between your first and second test. Anyway, as far as the vision goes, once you are qualified, and actually make it pass the NAMI physical when you get to API, your vision can go pretty bad and still fly. I think the flight doc had told me that you can have 20/40 for pilots and 20/100 for NFOs. Check it out for yourself so you don't get bad gouge from me if it has changed.

Good luck at boot camp. I took the same track to get here, and it was great. Sure, life sucks as a PFC (Perfect For Cleaning), but you get to understand both sides of the Corps and really appreciate what the enlisted do for you as an officer.

you can take the test 3 times but you have to wait 30 days in between, so you can take it on the 31st day after you took it. i just recently passed it on the second try....

deffinatly study the practice tests and know the info they ask especialy why the wrong answers are the wrong ones and why the right ones arre the right ones. im really bad at math myself but if you do the practice problems a few times concentrating first on HOW to do the problems and then on working QUICKLY you wont have any problems...i would also suggest on the math section you go through and do all the easy ones come back to the hard ones and with 45 seconds left go through and answer all the rest with the same letter this will increase your chances of passing the section greatly. After you take it for the first time you will know your weaknesses if you dont pass and you should study hard on those.....if you dont pass it the second time deffinatly wait and make sure you learn all you can before taking it that last time since that could decide how alot of your life is spent.

i hope this helps
email me if you have any questions.

Thanks! I would email you because I do have a few more questions for you, seeing that you are looking to become a Marine officer like myself, but I am still figuring out this site and can't figure out how to find your email address.

You can't really. You can however, click on his user name for a drop down menu and choose between sending him a private message, or sending him an email. This way, if he doesn't want to divulge his email to you - he doesn't have to.

I checked, and firedude1827 has PMs enabled.

Are you sure you're doing what phrogpilot is talking about? It works for me, too, but that could just be the mod knowledges. I click "firedude1827" and get a menu with an option to send him a PM.
