Recreational ORM is TRA, and it sucks. I keep telling myself it will be different in the fleet. Right now at flight school, we have to tell our advisors what we are doing every weekend, and get permission to do anything "risky."

God help the student who says he is going to study all weekend, then decides to go boating with some friends.

Dude...which HT are you in...wait don't answer that...because I know that we don't do that crap in MY squadron.

Do whatever you want. It's flight school, not the academy...but in doing that, be prepared for the consequences...

I know responsibility sucks...They should pay you more.

Total Risk Avoidance? Thats got to be the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Where's the fun in that?:icon_tong

It's not supposed to be fun. It's TRA (see also CYA for the CO). The whole point is to stop anything bad from ever happening to anybody, ever. After all, isn't that what we're here for? Our whole purpose for existing is to exist and stay as completely harm free as possible until we can retire. Where have you been?

By the way, TRA may someday be replaced by LCS (Leadership and Common Sense), but the program is not yet ready becasue the initiating conference was delayed 2 years because the participants are not allowed to drive or fly to the Pentagon becasue of TRA. Ironic, isn't it? They are all walking there wrapped in bubblewrap and thinking non-aggressive thoughts.

Four or five feet doesn't seem all that high to me. You can get more air than that with a regular behind-the-boat tube if you pop the wake the right way. All you need is a good ski boat. It's fun, but I can easily see how a guy could break his back.

I was out on my buddy's boat a few weeks ago tubing and we saw some people with these things. He's buying one in the next month or so. They normally just hover four or five feet above the water for 10 seconds or so. I've seen some videos of the accidents and it seems to happen when the people slip off and just have their arms on it; I'm assuming the lack of weight makes it fly 20 or 30 feet high.

It's not like they are happy about it in my squadron either, but it does happen. Walk across the hall and check out our "take 10 for ORM sheets." I have never been told that I can't do something (yet), but I have had to listen to some retarded "don't kill yourself" lectures. Or my favorite, the "priorities lecture" where someone tells you that flight school should have a higher priority than (fill in fun activity), therefore, you shouldn't do it.

The ORM policy isn't really that restrictive, but it does FEEL restrictive. And it makes you feel like you are twelve years old. Plus, I don't really think it stops stupid people from doing stupid things.

You're missing the point entirely! ORM has nothing to do with preventing accidents. Just as long as we appear to be doing something about safety, we've accomplished the mission. If we can cover our bosses a$$ while we're at it, all the better. Remember, results aren't important. It's the intentions that count. GET WITH THE PROGRAM, SAFETY VIOLATOR!!!!!!

Ok. Now I have to go finish my 2 gallon jug of Kool-aid.

Exactly. It's slogans and catch phrases that count. Not results. The more posters and handy reference cards your safety department puts out, the safer you appear. That's all that matters.

Here's a way to prove that ORM works miracles in safety: If you've had a period of accident-free time; ORM is working. If you ever have any kind of mishap, no matter how small; YOU ARE NOT USING ORM ENOUGH AND YOUR SAFETY OFFICER MUST BE FIRED!! IT'S ALL HIS FAULT!!

ORM: Learn it. Know it. Live it.

More Kool-aide......

the real question is how does this thing work being pulled by a car or truck

I think this guy is on to something here. I suppose you could mount some lunch trays to the bottom of the tube, and start driving fast.

Then again that would be as smart as those dumb kids that killed themselves a couple years back trying to copy the Jacka$$ show on MTV. But imagine the story you could tell afterwards...
