Probably obvious to you, but the 575M and F430 are not usually everyday drivers. Hope you have something else to drive. Ordinary daily driving will quickly devalue an investment in those types of vehicles. They aren't Caymans. Good luck all the same. I will be eagerly awaiting your return to learn how you chose. I don't even really "daily drive" my Cayman now. I've put 23k miles on it in 3 years, but it's been driven from TX to CA twice. Granted, I was deployed twice during that time, so ya.

People who buy nice cars to not drive should have their keys taken away. If you gave me that $24 million Ferrari from Pebble Beach, I'd drive the shit out of it. Unrestored 427 S/C Cobra? Who's up for a road trip? Sorry, cars are meant to be driven.

So people who buy nice cars and don't drive them should have their keys taken away and you'd drive the shit our of a Concours Ferrari, but you "don't even daily drive" your Cayman. 23K in 3 years? My Jag XK gets driven a lot more than that. Despite your rhetoric I bet we are pretty much in agreement here just because I am a driver as well, not a collector. My point was not that the cars in question are necessarily unreliable but that the cost of maintenance that comes with daily driving can be prohibitive for a USMC officer stretching the budget to buy something like a F430. A set of spark plugs installed is about $3000 for a F430, Belts are required every 15K miles at about $4000. I dare say not even the best shade tree mech can make most routine repairs to a modern Ferrari. Got a Ferrari dealer in Yuma? But for me what really regulates how much a car like a Ferrari gets driven is how often you want to expose it to idiots, rocks, semi truck tire shreds (hit a small tire shred in my CLK430 and it cost $800 to repair), unforcast hail, parking lot rash or any number of other hazards that will make you want to cry when you encounter them with your long dreamed of prize. I agree, these sort of cars absolutely should be driven. But they should be cared for and respected too. Not really because of what they cost, but because of the pleasure they bring. Beat the shit out of it when you can't afford to maintain it, let it get abused by road hazards and random idiots and the day will come real fast when it isn't nearly as pleasurable to own or even drive. Two years ago I bought a 1981 Mazda RX-7. I had one as an Ensign. This car had one owner, many high quality performance mods, original paint and interior and never driven in the rain, not in 30 years. Yet it had 68K miles. It was driven all right. And today it gets autocrossed and driven on sunny days.

Key word "used". A used 3 series in Italy can be had for sub-$8k quite easily. Probably 5ish.

Not quite yet. I'm going to get a used beater while I'm over there; probably a 3-series, A4, or a VW something.

The plan upon return is for something ridiculous and completely unnecessary. The short (but ever-changing) list for now is: 997 GT2, 991 GT3, 991 Turbo, 575M, F430, etc... I also have a kinda dream project 65/66 Mustang Fastback project in mind. Who knows.

However you slice it, there will likely be some wildly irresponsible expenditures of money on something to get me from point A to point B.

I was looking at 997 Carreras, beautiful cars, but my chipped E92 335i will easily out-perform it. Heresy, I know... not being a "true" sports car, but it is user friendly to work on and still fun to drive. It'll hold me a couple of years until a reasonable milage, used, 997 Turbo becomes more attainable.

So while we're on the topic, any of you car lovers have any thoughts on restoring an older Porsche? Ridiculously expensive and just easier to buy a new one? I'm in no position to go either route, but am thinking long term.

I don't know if it's fair to call it a POS either. I'm no honda guru, but that's an OLD body style. I bet that odo has several hundred thousand miles on it. Maybe one of these days I should get. the car I always wanted in high school and restore a mid 90s CRX.
