Anyone else wonder how ADM Boorda would feel if he saw the status of the STA-21 program now?
Oh come on! Are you trying to lure someone into an inappropriate response to that one... this is a trick-- DON'T DO IT!

It is a shame commisioning is becoming so hard for the enlisted community

So true. I feel like it is almost a punishment for the time that we are currently serving/ applying in. If that makes any sense. What I mean is this, I am sure we are all really competitive and would have a great shot if this were say FY08. But because we are applying for FY12/13 we can't be an officer (through this program). Hopefully the program does not go away, and it continues to give those who do wish to pursue a career as a Naval Officer the opportunity to do so.

One would think that STA-21 should account for a large number of officers. They bring a skill set which can not be obtained through OCS, NROTC, or the Academy. It seems keeping the numbers relative to the Navy's commissioning goal would only serve to strengthen our leadership as a whole.

I agree. But a certain group calls this philosophy "poaching" and thinks that it weakens the enlisted ranks. While our skill set as successful enlisted is desirable on many levels, it can be just as effective in the enlisted ranks or even in the LDO community. I love the STA-21 program even though I haven't made it yet, but on many levels it doesn't make sense.

The other side of that argument would be that the top producers in the enlisted ranks will eventually hit a stagnant part of their carrier where there isn't much more to grow into. By providing upward opportunities the Navy is more likely to keep those people instead of loosing them to private industry.

Plus anyone who thinks any one person isn't replaceable is fooling themselves.

Right. Agreed. But using that logic, stating that our experience can't be replaced by an NROTC educated Officer, is like stating we're irreplaceable. I don't like the cuts in the program, nor should any enlisted aspiring to be an Officer, all I'm saying is that on a very real level it makes fiscal and orperational sense for the Navy.
