if one enlists to the AW aircrew rate, how hard is it to get to the
s-3B, or can one even get to this aircraft through this rate?

Does anyone know if they are allowing backseaters to transition back to flight school to become a pilot..... I thought i read in Bogeys and Bandits were a backseater was 95% done with flight school and almost didn't make it through because they put in the rule not to allow "retreads" anymore. Maybe things have changed since the book was written but it seemed that retreads where more likely to be involved in an accident and the Navy quit allowing the transition to the front seat.

Second.... since this is under the topic of: Getting into naval aviation....... how did any of you all that got accepted into flight school do on your officer apptitude entrance exam. if possible i would like specific scores so i can compare mine. I feel that i could have done better.... i got caught by the clock on the first 2 sections and know i could do better but my recruiter says not to worry about it.

Thanks for any help

Tom

They are no longer putting Aircrew in S-3's in the regular fleet squadrons. The VAST majority of S-3 squadrons are doing more mid air refueling now instead of ASW or other functions. They still could be in some places, but if you go Aircrew don't count on any ship related platforms other than helo's or COD's. But AW's are all helo/P-3's and they send some on det's to the boats for training and stuff. But to answer your question, no S-3's anymore.

If you have any other aircrew related questions, check out my site http://www.angelfire.com/art/IMPEXP and go check out the yahoo group my girl and I started. She will be able to start answering updated Aircrew questions as of next month.

Good luck

You go through Primary in the back seat, but yes, you will learn to fly more or less but you're never PIC. When you get a transfer you go back and start SNA Primary as you've already had API as a NFO.

First off, you can get waivered to 31 years of age without prior service. It just depends on if your recruiter has made his quota and the needs of the Navy. Keep pressing. If that doesn't help then write your Congressman or Senator.
Right now, the Navy is converting NFO's and Helo Pilots to Jets. Good news for those guys. If anyone is in VT-21 or VT-22 then you'll agree that there are about 17 - 20 transition SNA's in those squadrons. Unfortunately, according to my last intel (which is 3 days old) TRAWING 2 has put the hold on transitions and will not train anymore for now. Does that mean ever again? No. Does that mean you'll have a chance in 4 years to transition? Maybe, but your recruiter is full of himself if he tells you can go to pilot training after 2 years as an NFO. Sorry bub..No DICE! It can't be guaranteed. You have to apply just like everyone else and it all depends on the needs of the service. All you need is one NFO to have another horrific crash, like in Nashville, and the NFO transitions will go away for another 8 years. If you want to be a pilot the NFO route is quite risky but it can happen. Semper, Frumby

P.S. Dave, are you going to Corpus or Whiting. If you do go to Corpus, you need to stop by the casa in Houston on your way to Corpus and have lunch.

I know I am a little late on this post but feel the necessity to make it. I was one of those guys who wanted to be a pilot but have eyes like a bat. I was interested in the nfo to pilot program but actually would not give up being a fo for anything. In my case, it was just luck but turns out I can't trim an aircraft to sale my life but ask me how to get from here to there, I'm the man to get you there! So sometimes when you think that something didn't work out, (Not getting a SNA job and qualifing for SNFO) it really did and you just don't know it yet!!!
Good Luck All
