Got air contract

I picked up a PLC pilot contract recently and I was wondering how the whole vision thing is going to work. I went to MEPS where I had 20/70 vision (corrected to 20/20), and from what I have read on airwarriors this is not good enough for pilot, now that the contact lens waiver is no longer valid. Why then did they give me the contract? Are they just assuming that I am going to go out and get PRK? If not will they wait until I go to pensacola for my physical after I have been to OCS and then NPQ me and make me an NFO or ground? I was honestly surprised that they went ahead and approved me with my vision. Thanks!

Not sure. But even if you wind up an NFO, like me, you're still flying. And the USMC is one place where NFOs are actually useful and needed in the aircraft we fly. Be careful about getting PRK done on your own now that you are contracted.

They gave you an air contract versus a ground or law contract. Air contract means either pilot or NFO. You probably did an NFO contract. Did you actually sign all your paperwork and everything yet? It should have said something about pilot/nfo on there. As far as going the PRK route, make sure you talk to your OSO about it because theres a process that needs to be done in order to get that approved. You could wait to go to OCS and then try to re-contract and then get selected as a pilot this time. But after waiting the 6 months and all the time getting the waiver and everything, you're not gonna go to OCS this summer. Another option is to go do your training this summer and then afterwards get the PRK done and then try to switch your contract before you commission. You'll still have to wait the 6 months and do all the motions, but you can do this during the semester now instead of holding off training. Its a big decision so make sure you research the hell out of whatever you choose.

What is your status so far? Did the OSO just complete the paperwork and make you "contracted" or have you been selected by the board? Also what year are you in school? Are you in PLC jr/sr or combined?

Good luck.

I got contracted by my OSO in November and the board results came out recently, and yes I have been approved by the board. I was contracted for pilot, not NFO. Has anybody had any experience with getting PRK done on your own while on PLC? That sounds like the best option for me. I was just wondering why they would give me a pilot contract when, from what I understand, my vision is below standards (for now). I am a sophomore going to juniors this summer. Thanks!

Good deal. I can tell you all the stuff you need to do and make sure of before, but I am having the procedure next month. so I will wait until after I actually go through it to give out any more info. Good luck.

a bit of advice on paperwork like that....

keep a copy of everything in a safe place and somewhere where you know exactly where it is.

example: they tried to make me take a second flight physical after I'd already completed the first and found PQ. Took the original in... no second physical required.

all my paperwork is at the office... i think i will take a visit down there on tuesday, just for kicks...

i really hope mine says pilot...

you can change your contract up till the point you sign your commissioning documents and raise your right hand. I was originally contracted as ground, then moved to NFO after juniors.

I'm sorry, but I may be missing something here....how in Jesus' sweet name do you not know what you contracted as? That's like saying you forgot your first name...

an air contract dictates you as a naval aviator. if you're contracted as an nfo, it'll be an nfo contract. they're 2 different things since the service agreements are 2 different lengths.
If you're getting PRK look into it a lot. If you're far sighted they have a smaller chance of success. For me (far sighted) if the process had not gone correctly, they wouldn't be able to correct my eyes to 20/20 and I'd be stuck ground. Not saying it's not a great process, but know the odds of all the consequences.
