you also learn some things you'll never do in navy flight training... i.e. short field/soft field take-offs and landings, turns around a point, horizontal S patterns, using an E6B vice a CR2, and filling out your own log book. overall a good time.. but you have to solo by 15 hours and some people have trouble landing at first.

I was talking to the XO of the ROTC unit at school and he told me about a training school called IFS which you go to before API. I haven't found anything about it on this website and was wondering if anyone has ever heard of this?

Really keeping your fingers on the pulse of Naval Aviation up there at ROTC 'huh? Hasn't IFS been around for at least 2 years now?

Yeah its great for people who wanted to be a pilot (such as myself) and then find out they have no natural ability to fly. Luckily I ended up in the back seat where I can't hurt anyone with a stick. (I didn't find that out in IFS, found it out in the contact phase for FOs.)

I'm doing IFS right now, boatloads of fun. Me and one other ensign have one more flight (cross-country solo) until we're done. Unfortunately LA's infamous smog and haze is causing a buncha cancelled flights and I'm about ready to stab someone over this crappy weather. All in all, I felt like the program was a great idea; although it'd be cool if the navy shelled out a few more bucks for ensigns and mids completing IFS so they could get a PPL, but oh well.

If you are doing IFS as a member of A-Pool at API, there are three (sometimes four) places that they send you...Pensacola Airport, Eglin Air Force Base, and Miracle Strip Aviation is Destin. I'm at Eglin right now. The people are great and its a pretty awesome atmosphere (tons of AF fighters in the air with you), but they are really prone to wasting your time. Try to get one of the other places if you can (you have some, but not much, input in that decision).

Oh no, I'm convinced that NIFS and T-6 contacts were designed purely to cure us of any desire to be a pilot....
