Yeah, they probably filled all the Fox Co. slots (Sept TBS).

my OSO is still saying that he's working under the assumption that i'll ship out next thursday. i find it kinda hard to believe that Fox Co isn't full, and hard to believe that they'd actually get all of the paperwork together and orders drafted in time. either way, it's kinda piss poor to run it down to the wire like this, i think. it's tough to make everyday arrangements when you don't know what state you'll be living in the next week.3

plus 186 graduates tommorow and they will be picking up most of the slots. You'll be lucky to get in the Nov class. If I were you I wouldn't worry about trying to make a certain class if you want pilot take your time and let the paperwork work itself out.

186 graduates? i assume you mean OCC?

a friend of mine who was just commissioned 2 weeks ago said that he didn't make sept class (Fox) for that reason. according to him, it's already full. i'm just worried that they're gonna "make room" for me up there, or that they held a slot for me, wanting to get another NFO in, and figuring that my file would be straight by the time for me to report in.

i don't view either as a likely scenario, but as anxious as i've been to get this show on the road, i'm not particularly enthused about having to ship out with only a couple of days notice (not to mention the likely much higher odds of switching to pilot if i don't make Fox).

well, here's the update.

I'm 2nd Lt Duke, as of noon today, and i have orders to report to TBS on 25 November (i THINK that's Thanksgiving day...kinda weird).

OSO's already started making calls about getting me switched to pilot, so we'll see how that goes.

Good 'ol Arctic Alpha. Think of it this way....you'll be getting to Quantico just in time for deer season.

well, if i have time to do any hunting, and i don't spend it doing other stuff, i have a Rem 700 ADL and a Browning 12 ga that will do the job just fine. I guess i bring them up one weekend and store them in the armory if i decide i want them.

i don't plan on taking anything besides my uniforms, computer, and about half of my civilian clothes up there, at least to begin with.

Hopefully they'll still give the 2 weeks of basket leave during the hollidays. I stayed there since I had a newborn and did some hunting. I'd find a friend that lives out in town and leave my guns with him before I'd leave them in any armory. I lived in base housing and kept them with me.

Congratulations theduke, I hope everything works as planned. Quantico will be cold in the winter. Hope you have fun hunting, let me know if you need help eating those deers you kill. I do a good job roasting animals.
What OSO are you from?

^^^i'm fairly certain that we still get those 2 weeks. in fact, i THINK we report in on thanksgiving day, then turn right around and go back home. i'm not totally sure, though. doesn't make too much difference.

i didn't think about leaving my guns with someone in off-base housing. that might be a good idea. i have a 700 ADL in 7mm REM, a Browning B-80 12 ga, a SIG 226, a Marlin 882SSV .22 WMR, and a High Standard .22 target pistol.

^^if i get around to doing any hunting up there, i'm sure there will be venison to spare. between all of my other hobbies, i don't know how much hunting i'll do, though.

at any rate, i'm from OSS Raleigh. i went to N.C. State, which is about a half mile away from the OSO office...and i lived about halfway in between the two of them until i graduated.

^the commissioning was held at the NCSU Memorial Bell Tower. it's a memorial to NCSU students and alumni killed in action.

Unless you're planning on spending some time at the range, I'd leave everything but the 12 Ga at home, because that is all you can hunt with on base.....and a bow. I was digging around my shed the other day and found the Quantico map that has all the hunting areas on it. Quantico is huge and you can hunt most of it. I shot a deer right off washboard trail by TBS. The monster weighed in at 57 lbs!! I'd hate to see what a 7mm Mag would do to it.

Anyway, congrats on the commissioning, who is that in the pic with you. It looks like the Capt is about to backhand you...lol

haha, "IT AIN'T NOTHIN' TO ME TO GIVE A BUTTERBAR FIVE ACROSS THE EYES, SON."

from left to right, it's 2Lt Dan Fitzpatrick (who actually graduated highschool with me-6 years ago), Capt Eric Burns, me, Capt Tommy Walker. the two Captains are the OSOs.

i might very well spend some time on the range, but i prob won't shoot the SIG until after i qualify with the 92fs. any time i spend on the pistol range will be spent with the service pistol, at least until i get that expert badge. if there's a 500+ yard range i can shoot the 7 mag on, i might take it up there. we'll see.

oh, and 57 lbs doesn't sound that big. i've never weighed any of mine, but i shot an 8-pointer last year that must weighed WAY over 100 lbs. the 7mm is mean, but it's not THAT bad. i took out the near shoulder, and didn't even bother to try to salvage anything out of it (was shooting 150 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips)

honestly, though, i kinda doubt i do much hunting up there. might take the 12 ga and go once or twice. i just have a feeling that whatever spare time i get will be spent doing other things.

I was being sarcastic. I'm from westTx where the Mule Deer dress out over 200 lbs. I've seen jack rabbits almost as big as the deer we shot. My point was, the deer are friggin tiny out there. If you shoot one over 100 lbs then you have a winner.

ah, ok. if you're used to punching holes through mule deer, i guess the whitetails are nothing to write home about.

i shot a yearling doe once that might not have been too much over 57 lbs...hahaha.
