60 B loss of TR Drive/Thrust Procedude
(Airspeed/Alt Insufficient to Auto)
1-PAC- HOVER HOVER HOVER
2-PNAC-Hands on PCLs
3-PCL-s Off When Directed (about 30 feet)

I guess you have to try something when there's nothing left to do.

I don't know how the pilots are going to reach up and secure them with all of the centrifugal force. I went to one of Mike Durant's (Blackhawk Down Super 64) speaking engagements and he stated they were pinned against the doors. I think he said they landed with one PCL 1/2 off and the other full up.

Does that kill all your tendency to spin (w/o TR), or is there some left over in the rotor head as it spins. That's a poorly worded question, but do you get my jist?

Brett

Brett-

If you enter an auto (aka, falling to your death with a chance to save it at the bottom), there is no torque on the head. Helo slipstreams and autorotates. Spinning stops. PCLs need to be off prior to flare and collective pull (cushion with energy stored in head) to avoid re-spinning.

In the "Hovering Cut Gun" (aka- spinning to your death) You try to lower the helo in a semi controlled manner while the torque on the head wants to rotate you at some speed that is too fast to be good for you in a direction oposite the head.

The theory is that you can maintain some semblance of control, while not pranging blades off the fueslage, and time pulling the PCLs off at or about 30' to cushion..

All while G-forces try to make your face one witht the windshield.

It is also a little unrealistic to think the PAC will be directing the shutoff of the PCLs. Hopefully he is a bit more occupied with hitting level...

I think that is an important point....landing/crashing level attitude.

Do 60B guys practice tail rotor malfunctions, both drive and control?

Loss of T/R contril will go to a position to provide balanced level flight at 35 and 133 KIAS. But people think if you go below 60Kt, you spin....

Also, possible to make a play for the deck onto a small boy with it. But, most people claim they will climb to 1000' and auto to the water with a loss of TR Control.. (that is dumb in its own right, and would be a thread unto itself)

Unfortunately, the 60S sim is not sophisticated enough to model drive or control failures well. I had a chance to work with RAF-types in their (very excellent) 101 simulators and walked away even more disappointed with what we are teaching.

No doubt. Not to worry though, it will all be fixed with the R. Money will flow like wine to the downtrodden of the rotary wing world, and there will be rejoicing throughout the land.

did they have their procedures wired, or was the sim just a good training tool (or maybe a combination)?

So you have drank the S/R Koolaide?

I will believe it when I am delivering parts for them that are not backordered.

The sims did a good job of modeling tail rotor failures, and the instructors were top notch. Unfortunately I traded my kool aid for a box lunch so I am a bit of cynic when it comes to the helo master plan.

Tail Rotor Malfunctions: Another example of Frank Piasecki's genius...

I've got a friend that flies 60F's and she lost her tail rotor in Kuwait during transition to forward flight. 7 seconds, and 3 complete rotations later, the aircraft was destroyed and the crew made it out ok...
