A friend of mine told me the other day that someone had 17 people in the back of a -60B. For anyone who's been back there, that's a total rack and stack 'em situation.
Holy sh!t - 17 people! I'm having trouble imagining that - even if they pulled out the sono launcher, that's a real nuts to butts scenario.

I'm working w/ the LT in question. At the kennel...

He ought to do a Good Morning America interview. Tell his side of the story on nation wide TV.

Funny how all the "accusers" (ie Tailhook) can do interviews and not get in trouble, so how about a little fleet hometown interview with someone doing something to help people?

I can just imagine the DOD spin doctors deep in the bowels of the Pentagon working overtime to fix this story...already hearing DOD is refuting the claim that the pilot's were counseled.

Tell him he needs to get his ass on AW then. Unless he's here already...?

probably upset the CO even more after they relayed it to the press...

Good the CO SHOULD be ashamed of himself!

These two helo drivers should stand tall and realize they acted as a Naval Aviator should - they adapted, seized the moment, made the call. Good for them

It's assh*les like their <edit> who should be fired. Shame on that guy!

I Was just rethinking this post - I wonder if indeed their CO was getting flack from some weenie at the Wing or AirLant 0 and the skipper was doing what he could to actually protect hios crews from further backlash. Most skippers are (should be ) pretty protective of their flocks. I guess the situation deserves the benefit of the doubt...no?

Obviously, Chuck, you're quite a risk taker and trouble maker. How could they do these things first when they hadn't spent two hours on the Navy's ORM website getting their little certificate, then having their ORM brief before their NATOPS brief. Followed by, of course, checking their wallets for their ORM card to ensure it was still there. And then to perform a mission that had not been briefed by the SDO or wasn't on the flight schedule? They're lucky the helo didn't implode right there!*

*For the record, I do not know any details of what happened other than what's been said here, and post the above w/ tongue firmly implanted in cheek.

I about fell off my chair laughing after reading this :)

There was a day when becoming an Aircraft Commander was the pinnacle of decision making - and earning that title implied you had been bestowed with the trust and confidence of your commanders. It's this kind of decision making and judgement that requires us to be officers and pilots. If you want us to solely manipulate the controls then we are back to "stick monkey".

regarding the HAC in question, rescuing a 100 people while coordinating and leading his copilot and crew meant this guy was no slouch. Steaks and beer for him and his crew on me should we ever cross paths!

Where's A4s when you need him to chime in on an issue like this!

@Chuck:

I think that a large part of making HAC is still that way, and I don't mean to be taking away from my contempories who have made HAC in the recent past. But there's always that perceived overshadowing that someone is waiting for you to do something so that it can be picked apart. Not necessarily by the CO or the command, but by someone who didn't have to make the call at the time.

I would say that in my limited experience (one sea tour), I was lucky and had the support of the front office in 99% of the situations (not that it was something this "public"). The other 1% was a "Why did you do that!?!" Once the scenario was explained, the issue went away.

A kennel like for dogs and cats and sh!t? Who came up with that idea, or am I missing something?

Yes... it is an animal shelter. Its for the pets of military families displaced by Katrina that are staying in Pensacola and can't have their pets with them.

Its a fun job... I guess.

and this is run by a military person why? sounds like it falls under MCCS/MWR and should be headed by a civilian. sounds like a real waste of training for a military member.

yeah, no kidding. apparently pilots are more useful keeping track of everyone's pets than delivering supplies/rescuing people. I loved the part about the kennel assignment not being a punishment for the pilot-I'm sure his years of training will be put to good use there and he is really excited about it.

The other LT that runs the shelter is also flying supplies and rescue to N.O.... The enlisted folks that work there were displaced by the storm. The 3 ensigns (myself and 2 of my buddies) are all SNFO's waiting to start API... The Army and Air Force vets that are there were also displaced.

I.E.... the other LT works there on the days he's not flying to and from NO...

So its not really a waste of talent and time...
