USN Hey Brett, is this kid in your squadron?

The best thing this guy can do is "own it". I'd suggest he make a poster-sized copy of that billboard and hang it over his desk, rack, or whatever. Then make a bunch of 8x10 copies, autograph them, and hand them out to his fellow officers. He should take all his squadronmate's good-natured jabs in stride and dare them for more. The humor in this event will be exhausted soon enough. In the end he will have shown his toughness, sense of humor, earned some respect from his peers, and ideally tightened up comraderie in the ready room.

At least it used to work like that.

To me, the one minor aspect that gives me pause is:

Do you think his parents were partly trying to use their son's military service to sell more cars?

I am not convinced either way, but I wonder if that was any part of their decision calculus.

If it's a resounding no, then hey, that's awesome and more power to the ensign and his family for having the means and the idea. He may catch flak from his unit but not from me.

Admins, Billboard Baggins is trying to make an account, anyway we can expedite his acceptance?

As long as they make his username "Billboard Baggins" and make the image his profile picture, I'm all for it.

In his not-defense: While I'm sure he had good intentions towards his father, he did in fact post a picture of it on facebook saying that he loved it....

In his defense, every one of us in here would have thought that was awesome, when we were brand new Ensigns in API. If you say otherwise, you're a damn liar and I don't want to hear from you anyway. It's right up there with posing in your new flight suit with your API issue sunglasses and posting that shit on Facebook. Or going on leave and telling your flight school war stories.

The difference is this:
Is he on here? Do you know him?
Huge difference between a ready room where everybody knows everybody and copious amounts of shit are given and taken versus some anonymous person posting this shit on the internet for the sole purpose of humiliating him. Should he get a call sign? Yes...should his squadron mates tease him relentlessly? Absofuckinglutely. Should he could go to kangaroo court? Hell yea...But if you aren't in his squadron and don't know him then this is just pure bullshit.
Everyone in Naval Aviation is in the same club and are fair game. If I ever met this young man I would laugh about his callsign and the classic way he earned it and buy him a beer.
