HHG Shipping

I've got a few questions for everyone down in A-pool/API right now. From what I have been able to gather, since my orders to API are TEMDUINS (sp?) I'm only allotted 600# of HHG shipping, prior to my ultimate PCS move for primary. So if that is correct my questions are:

1) Are they making new SNA's live in the BOQ? I've heard conflicting rumors about this both on here, and from friends in API/Primary. The last I heard, they re-instated BAH-F for SNA's but were possibly making them live on base.

2) Assuming #1, would it be adviseable to still move a bed and a couple other items in case I am able to live off base (I already have some friends with an open room down there, so it would be a matter of getting the sign-off). Obviously if moving off-base is a no-go, then I'll be stuck storing my stuff.

3) Per #2, once I do get my orders to primary and go to make a PCS, since all my belongings will be coming from across the country (home of record), what options do I have for moving any items that I had trucked down for API? Does the govt cover this expense, or will I have to figure out a way to move my bed and other items from my address in P-cola? Since I don't have a truck, it would be a big hassle to move this stuff in the event that I got orders to Corpus.

I hope that makes sense, thanks in advance for your help!

CLIFFS NOTES:
I am trying to decide whether or not I should move my bed and a couple other items to P-cola for API, or if I should just plan to live at the Q until I head off to Primary

1.) No. As of right now they are trying to make SNA's with orders to Whiting field for primary live in the BOQ at Whiting once they get there. I believe (read hope) that everyone that is already in API/A-pool and has signed a lease is exempt, but by the time you get down here that wouldn't apply. They are not making SNA's or SNFO's in API/A-pool live in the BOQ, in fact they are too full even if you wanted to right now. (I'm sitting in the BOQ right now, but they're kicking me out in a week.)

2.) That would be up to you. You will be able to live off base at least while in API/A-pool. After that its anyones guess, unless you want to go ahead and volunteer for Vance...

3.) I was told when moving down here from OCS (Newport) that the #600 was for moving MYSELF down here. I have follow on orders to Whiting so I got a PCS move from my home of record, but I was told I could file a claim for up to 600#'s that I moved down from Newport. I believe this would apply in your case. I would call PSD to be sure, but I think you would be able to move your stuff from your HOR and move 600# from here. I would think your bed would way less than 600 pounds? You're going to have to get stamped weigh tickets for the stuff that you move, so if you are only moving say #150 I'm not sure it would be worth the hassle for the returns. Thats up to you.

You should still ask PSD, but that was my experience.

I guess I could sleep in a cot for a few weeks if it came down to it. Its pretty much too late in the game for me to arrange a DITY style move. It would be Thuper to have my bed and some boxes of clothes and things however. Do you know what the lead time for commercial shipping (if I were going the govt route) ends up being?

MIDNJAC- Its not too late to arrange a dity move. You can even do a "after the fact dity move." That is when you get to P-cola you do all the paperwork (with the acception of the weight tickets, you would need to do those enroute). I did that when I moved to P-cola. Also too once you get your orders you could so the whole smartwebmove website, if you want the comercials movers to come. It doesnt take too long for them to be arranged. When I got picked up for advanced, I move from Whiting in a week from selection.

Not too sure about the whole Whiting BOQ thing, since when I was there we could live off base.

Good luck

If you end up moving your bed and such down there and then get orders to Primary say at Corpus. Then just rent a UHAUL truck or something, you will be reimbursed for all those $$$, with a few exceptions.

To add some more confusion, we had some ensigns turned away from Whiting's BOQ because they said it was "full", and they let them stay out in town. That may change with the winds though.

Right, so hopefully the Whiting thing won't apply. I just have temporary orders pending my final orders to primary. Am I able to do a commercial move for that 600# allottment then? There isn't nearly enough trunk space in my car to move much in the way of anything.

For 600lbs? I am not sure if you can do a commercial move, but why would you want to? I know you said your car is small and such, but not joke why not rent a uhaul trailer or truck, fill it with stuff then move it. Your going to get your money back for what you spend on the Uhaul/gas and such. Just a sugesstion, your going to make money if you do a DITY move and for 600lbs of stuff a comercial move may not be pratical. But I dont work in TMO you may want to call a local personal property office or the one in Pensacola and just ask them your questions, the ladies in P-cola are ususally pretty nice and answered all my questions when I was heading through there.

Best of luck.

Thats a good idea, as I have only been trying to contact my local JPPSO to no avail. I would take a uhaul truck, but then I'd have no car once I get there...or am I missing something?

I looked at the U-haul vehicle trailers, and I'm worried about using one since they only rate them up to 45 mph. It seems like this would be a huge hassle for such a long road-trip. Has anyone used one of these? Any thoughts on this?
