Hook vs. Hick - Apples & Oranges?

I was just curious, how do military pilots compare to pro athletes in how difficult it is to become one? For example, lets say that 1% of people who play a specific sport become a professional athlete (just a made up figure). If you took all of the people that want to become a military pilot compared to those who achieve that goal, what do you think that the percentage would be who become aviators? What about specific pilots, like fighter and whatnot?

I was both...what does that tell you?
Beer Pong does not count... to give the poster an "intelligent" answer
. Pro sports you need to have more athletic ability than 99.99% of the populace. Brain power not really a requirement. Aviation much more of a combination of both. If as many people wanted to be pilots in the Navy vice NFL. Percentages would be drastically different.

I had to steal this from HueyCobra because it fits so well here. Not only does this sum up what I think of the original question, but it adds nicely to the shoe's statement:

No. This is not one of those "What % percent get what" questions. I have looked around enough to know what it depends on how good you are and the requirements of the Navy at the time. It was just a real question. I only metioned fighters because it is obvious that they have a lower percentage of people making them more likely to compare to pro athletes.

apples and oranges. Stats are stupid and people try to make numbers relate that really shouldn't.

How much athleticism does it take to be a COD pilot? We have a heck of a lot less COD guys in the world than the total amount of pro athletes divided by fighter pilots. That just doesn't seem to sound right. Oh well.

For that matter, how much athleticism is required for any military flying? This image of the "fighter jock" being some kind of athlete may be part of the mythology, but it's far from reality. I mean, how in shape do you have to be to sit in a seat, clench up your butt cheeks and grunt a lot? :D

Hell I never performed the "hick" manuever while I was in the -45. It was just a squeeze of the buns like you say. And I must say that I've got buns of steel baby!

That is not true. A lower percentage are E2/C2 pilots. There are less of them than fighter pilots.

What is the hick maneuver? I thought it was hook?

The physiologists changed it to hick...apparently it seals off the glottis better and lets you keep better pressure.
