Hot new helicopter/rotorcraft news

Still begs the question, who rates HSC support, 250 miles from their home base, back and forth from Laguadia to Bayonne, for several days, just to go golfing.

Unless this is a new mission capability we've not heard about.

A cross country to LaGuardia wouldn't be unusual. Sure you have the data right? I didn't look on an ADS-B tracker, but Gemini did for me and says 167821 has remained in the Mid-Atlantic for the last two months, primarily around Norfolk, but as far north as KGED.

I tracked that BuNo on ADSB Exchange from it passing over my house in central NJ until it landed at Chambers. The history for that aircraft showed several trips between LGA and 2NJ9 from the 19th through the 25th.

I see that now, though ADS Exchange just says "New Newark" for me (no 2NJ9).
What do you think the chain of that tasking is?
Someone here could pull it up in SHARP, not that I think the answer should be posted here. But interesting for sure.

Is the step on the cabin door a recent mod? I'm guessing this aircraft is the same model involved in the DCA CRJ mishap...
The steps have been in the VH-60M model, called “gold tops,” for at least five or six years. The -60 in the CRJ accident was an olive drab UH-60L (flown by the same battalion).

Sikorsky released a press video on the current plans for the x-hawk /H-60 in future proof config.
This is in essence a big marketing video by LM Sikorsky. But what's clear is the H-60 platform is not going away quietly. Single pilot or pilot optional versions, improved powerplant, and configurations to meet a modern battlefield seem to be just a few of the topics they address.

Looks like the new 900 series engines will have a substantial performance increase for the H-60’s. Paging IKE…

These changes, coupled with integration of the T901, would increase the payload by 1,000 lb. or more and extend the range by 100 nm. and add 45 min. time on station, he says.

“flying the helicopter at 19,000 ft. with its collective ‘all the way up,’ and the chopper was still climbing in excess of 1,000 ft./min.—potentially double that”

Curious what the environmental and gross weight conditions were for a test like this. Ain’t no way a 60R is pulling that off in the South China Sea.

Engines only give you so much. The drive train also needs to handle said power. Kinda like putting a 454 in a basic Honda civic.
Depends. The eternal tradeoff of rotary wing aviation is do you have a transmission that can handle 100% of all engine power at sea level, or do you have an excess of power at sea level which gives you better single engine performance at sea level and better dual engine performance at altitude?

That said, an uprated transmission would be likely.

Like others have said, depending on weight and environment, a bigger engine means the transmission torque limit will be the constraint in more of the operating region. I expect (hope) Seahawk 2.0 will have a beefier transmission, but bigger engines would help with high/hot ops.

I don't have any data on the new engines, but I'd bet lots of money it's an extra 100 nmi OR extra 45 min on station. Max range is effectively time spent at max range airspeed and trades directly with max endurance time. 100 nmi is close to 45 min at V_range, and either of those is a significant increase (like having a 600-lb internal aux tank situated behind the copilot...RIP Ocean Hawk)
