I am getting zapped next monday, June 25th, and in the event that the pain is severe what are some things that you all have found to help mitigate the pain? I asked the doctors at TLC this and they said that they can prescribe to me some Tylenol w/ codeine. Do pain killers really help that kind of pain or should i just stick to the old cold compress?

The doc gave me numbing eye drops and vicadine...enough to knock me out cold. My right eye hurt something horrible.....to me it felt like someone was holding a lighter up to it. Not everyone feels the same though so hopefully yours won't be that bad.

Yeah they gave me a prescription for this stuff called Zymar. I dont know what it is, my guess is that it is numbing drops. If my eye feels anything like you described then i definetely want something like Vicodin or something to knock me out cold. I talked to one guy that is at our local sherrifs dept and he said that when he had his done he couldnt open his eyes for 3 days and it felt worse than CS gas and Cayenne pepper.

Howdy,
I had PRK done in November of 06 so its been about nine months. I've been noticing some starbursting and glare when I drive at night, mostly with stoplights. It isn't really bad and its only really noticeable at a distance of about 100+ ft. I read somewhere that it can take over a year for night glare to go away completely and I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this and how long it took for them to stop noticing night glare. I'm also curious as to how strict the Navy is with vision requirements. Does vision litertally have to be perfect? I have 20/20 in both eyes and other than some night glare and dry eye everything seems to be fine.

Thanks!

I know it's late to the conversation, but my experience with PRK was good, judging from a cost/benefit analysis.

My command allowed anyone who wanted to and was eligible for surgery to go through it, because I guess Trippler Army Medical Center had spare time on their hands or something. My vision was around 20/60 in each eye, so I signed up.

Process was smooth; the worst part was the sand-in-the-eyes feeling on days 3 through 6, and as long as you keep up on the drops they give you, you will heal in the prescribed time. I had missed a few drops every day for a week, and the doctor noticed it in how my eye was healing; she then upped the dosage and I healed fully by a couple of months post-surgery.

I haven't had any irregular eye problems since then, though I have noticed an ever so slight increase in glare. Good trade off for 20/15 vision.
