HQMC Restricts Non-Issued Armor Use

Interesting article on Military.com on the effectiveness of newer design body armor over what is currently issued. This same story was picked up by NBC news as well. The Pinnacle Dragon Skin system is supposedly the best out there and the report goes on to state that people are buying their own in lieu of OTV/Interceptor/SAPI.

Read the story here

Also discusses use of simple plate carriers vice entire body armor and when do you allow a "lower level of PPE"

Interesting read.

Yeah they had an article about it in Marine Corps Times. They interviewed some SSgt who swore by dragon armor. He said that if he got deployed again he was going to wear dragon skin under his blouse then the MTV over everything else.

Supposedly after he shelled out 2 grand for his he shot .45 rounds at it to see how it worked. Once satisfied he proceeded to put it on and shoot himself. Now THATS trust.

A 155mm hit I am skeptical. But I did see the Future Weapons he is talking about (even though I hate the narrator) and I was impressed by vest.

They showed a test where the vest survived a grenade blast at point blank. I doubt the wearer would have survived the blast however.

Armored vehicles can't survive a 155mm hit, how the hell can any type of body armor......

I think he ment to say the vest remains "Intact" after being in proximity to a detonated 155 round. So hey you can reissue the gear so thats... swell.

As for the whole shooting yourself idea. The first guy to really get Kevlar on the map did that very thing on video and it was sent to a Police Chiefs conveintion showing him put a round into his chest at point blank and then pick the gun back up and return fire on a target to demonstrate the vests capability.

So you all know, I was kidding about the 155mm. Though I have no doubt that the vest would be just fine after a machine wash.
