Hey, quick question- If I start IFS here in Quantico (presently C Co TBS), do I still get '96s off? Or how do holidays work? In other words, before I buy plane tickets, does IFS get the same base holidays off?

Well.....you can actually get more than that of if you need it. You are sort of in a gray area as far as "days off".

You can tell whatever school you are in that you have soemthign coming up and they will let you do whatever you need to do.

Technically, you still have to file an OOB chit if you are going OOB. And take leave if it isn't on a holiday. Techincally.

You can certainly request the '96' days off, and they will almost always comply (they would probably only give you problems if you are progressing slow and/or weather has been really bad for a long time). You might be working on those days if you don't request to be off the schedule. Remember, they have different holidays off than us military types.

thanks semper gumbi...also, does IFS kick off right after TBS... for example..im scheduled to graduate OCT 6, and there is a '96 from the 7th to the 10th...is it pretty certain that the school will start that next tuesday....or does IFS not observe Columbus day (monday)?

There are 4 (I think) places to do IFS in the Quantico metropolis area. I'm guessing it depends on which place you go. Also, when we finished TBS, the IFS groups started in stages...a few this week, a few next week...

Your company aviation rep should be finding out more for you soon.

Not positive abou that. I am pretty sure, though (read: 99%), that you have to be commisioned because the Marine Corps is flipping the bill. Otherwise you could run out and cause them a headache.

You can always do a XC solo on your own dime. But that would probably be stupid unless you are insanely rich.

If I have over a year until TBS can i do IFS now, do you have to be commissioned?

PLC has the Flight Indoctrination program, which is essentially IFS before you graduate college (unless they've done away with that). Talk to your OSO about it. I did that, but still ended up having to do IFS since I didnt' do a solo XC trip.

Actually, the USMC is NOT doing the FIP program anymore. Unless you have prior flight time and a logbook with a instructor signing you off for a cross country solo, you will have to do IFS either before or after TBS. If you want to skip IFS, better get your XC solo on your own dime.

Not to sound stupid, but what is IFS?

I don't know the official acronym, but from what I've gathered throughout my time here on this board, you can think of IFS as "Initial Flight School". Basically the Marines send you to a certified FBO to do civilian flight school up to (or through?) your first solo flight in the Private Pilot course. The reason for this is to greatly decrease the ramp up time when you get to API/Primary at a fraction of what it would cost to get the same initial training at API/Primary

Again, this is just the understanding that I've gathered through my time here on this board... someone please correct me if I'm wrong :)

Stands for Introductory Flight Screening, I believe. Program designed to allow people to see if they actually like flying, and are capable, before they get to primary.

Civilian ground school and 25hrs of flight training in a non-complex aircraft over a 60 day period.
Solo to be done in 30 days and at no more then 15hrs of training.
Solo cross country.
Can be done down in Pensacola, or prior to reporting to NASC as it is done at a part 141 flight school (which has to submit a bid to train the student, and the IFS office in pensacola has to apporve).

Those are the basic requirements if i remember correctly.
They also have IFS for NFOs now down in Pensacola. I think they get 13hrs of flight time. Not sure if they solo or do a xc.

Is that just Marine NFOs DOR/attriting or Navy NFOs too?

I'm not in the pipeline so I don't know for sure, but my guess is Navy NFOs are doing just fine do to the pilot pipeline being flooded atm. I'd imagine a number of SNA's that are being/have been dropped are transfering to NFO or at least trying to. I'm speaking strickly based on logical deduction of what has been happening recently on the Navy side, gathered from information posted here on Airwarriors of course.

But then there's always the disclaimer, what is the standard today, may not be the standard tomorrow. You know, the whole "only constant is change" and "needs of the Navy (or Marines)" of course.

That's pretty cool. I wish they had a program similar to that when I went through...
