Increase in aviation quota for next year.

How much weight do things such as major and traffic violations carry? I believe that I am a strong applicant, but I am a Kinesiology major and have a couple of speeding tickets. Kinesiology is not a technical degree, but it is a human science degree with a number of classes in life sciences.

I have extra curriculars, continued employment, strong LOR's and good professional interviews by those in the aviation community. If my traffic violations and lack of a technical major were considered negatives, could the rest of my package counter it? Or are they that important?

there are a lot of variables that go into it Pigz...many people have been selected from 'just above the mins' to the extreme shit hot candidates. slots available, your package, how well your motivational statement caught the attention of the person reviewing your package..etc..etc..etc it isn't a simple formula of what gets you in.

aerospace engineering 3.8 gpa from MIT and 9/9/9 OAR of 9,359,305 doesnt always get you in automatically...many variables come into play. just roll the dice...if you don't get selected make your package better and try again! good luck to you.

know you are making a point, but i'll bet a 3.8 gpa from MIT in aero engineering with 9/9/9 and max OAR will get the job done 99.9% of the time if a person is medically and physically qualified! ;)

Damn, you guys figured out my strategy. :icon_smil

PigzFly asked the question about the relevance of his major (kinesiology)...I also have a non-technical degree in Finance. Neglecting LOR's, physical exam, vision, etc - which I expect to do fine in - does the absence of a technical degree generally hurt applicants? I keep reading that having a tech. degree helps and that the board looks at the whole package. Any one else ever heard of a finance major flying? I'd happily be the first.

Plenty of pilots have non-tech degrees. It may be a boost factor for the boards, but Finance shouldn't really be a problem if you've got good grades. I'm up before the board right now with a Music Industry degree.

My dad said he played golf with a S-3 pilot who had a degree in business. If you have good ASTB scores I really do not think it would matter too much whether you have a technical or non-technical degree. If anything, the ASTB benefits those without a technical degree, giving them a chance to show that they are good at math and other "technical" skills.

Also, way back in High School I think I remember one of the Blue Angel pilots saying they had a non-technical degree, not sure which degree exactly though.

Non tech degrees are not a big deal as long as you can demonstrate an understanding of math/physics/mechanics on the astb.

Couple of speeding tickets should not be a big deal. Imagine though an app that looks just like yours, but that guy has no speeding tickets. If it is between you and the guy that drives like his grandmother, it might become a player. That said, don't sweat a couple moving violations.

DSL...but "said" individual writes on his/her motivational statement "I wanna fly jets, because my grandfather, father, uncle, and dog flew jets in the Navy."...and oops...that darned DUI sophmore year...then being medically/physically qualified and great academics won't get you anywhere is my point. As Winks said earlier...a lot of kids roaming college campuses who decide to take a stab at Naval Aviation probably have a couple things going against them that would disqualify them. For example I have a couple friends who have their Masters degrees in engineering, one of those guys went to Columbia and one night of partying as a sophmore...dui on the record. It's very common, and there are many barriers to entry in the profession.

JT... any word on your end yet? What NRD are you under? I am in Norman, OK (Univ. of Okla) and under the jurisdiction of the Dallas NRD..I wonder how many applicants sent off in the TX,OK area this month. I was gonna call my recruiter but I picture " Oh hey...yeah you didnt get in..I was gonna call ya, been busy...sorry about the luck, toodles for now!! (click)" So I'm just trying to stay busy with work/school/pt and not think about it...trying is the key word.

Me too. Charlotte, I think - not sure about NRD. OR's office is in Charlotte, the only other one in the state is in Raleigh. I don't want to call, he said he would let me know as soon as he heard something. Plus, Goob hasn't said the results are posted yet. Someone would know something if they were, and would have posted up on AW. Good luck...this wait is killing me.
