Intraservice Transfer into Aviation

sammyd

O-2
Good evening, all,

currently A/D USCG looking into intraservice transfers for aviation slots. From what I’ve read/heard, it’s not promising to get into a flight pipeline without going through that branch’s accession points, but I’m wondering if you fine folks have further insight.

The bad news: I’m 31. Unfortunately, we don’t currently accept age waivers due to a healthy candidate pool and very few training slots. This means I am pretty much out of luck for the foreseeable future. The good: I have about 130 hours of flight time with a tailwheel endorsement (Luscombes are awesome!) My flight packet would need some updates but is solid. My command is also super supportive and will absolutely endorse me should an opportunity open up.

All that to say, the CG’s training pipeline issues just aren’t conducive to making my goal of flying happen in this branch. That means I’ve got to pivot and weigh my options. First, apply to ANG units and start rushing. Second, use my TA/GI bill to finish out my civilian ratings and transition to the reserves. I’d be happy with either, but am curious if there is a lateral path to stay A/D.

Appreciate your time reading this!

V/R,

I don’t have an answer to your question. But if you aren’t able to find your answer here, there’s a pretty active Facebook group called “Coast Guard Officer Commissioning Programs” that has people that would be able to give you guidance.

Hopefully guys with current experience will chime in, but from the old guy, nose bleed, cheap seat perspective I fear that time and external circumstances are simply unfortunate in your case. The army is shedding aviators under their latest innovation, the USAF continues to have a pilot shortage, but their problem isn’t accessions, it’s retention. People who are more in the know about the Navy and Marines can comment further. My guess is that the Air Guard is about the only opportunity, but even then I recently read that most of the guys leaving active duty to fly for the airlines are going into the Guard squadrons. I wish you well and hope others here can offer real prospects.

If looking to go USN you would need to contact the Aviation Officer Community Manager, not any of the accession programs. Then it would depend on many factors, first is if they have a need with your YG.
