Jan API starts...

I'm wondering if someone can help clarify API for me. My husband doesn't have to do IFS - and we've just received orders to have him check into Pensacola on Jan 3rd. Does he just have to complete his NAMI physical (Tuesday someone mentioned), probably do some paperwork of some kind, and wait for a Friday to start API? I've heard all sorts of rumors when it comes to how long it takes to actually start API. I REALLY want him to start asap - he's going crazy not flying!! :) Or is it as someone else said, wait to complete all the "to dos" and then it's luck when you get to start? Surely there must be some kind of....organized process behind it - right?

Well, I can't say much for what the process is once you get to Pensacola, as I'm waiting to go there myself...but I can tell you that your husband is not alone. I defered going to Flight School to get a Masters and I'm just going nuts waiting to get out of here and start flight school...techinically, flight school is just more school, but it beats eigenvalues and experiments any day!

Though, from what I'm hearing, he'll check in on his required date and they'll point him in the right direction as far as medical, etc. He'll then start API on the first available Friday. It could be Jan 9 or it could be in February (or later). It really depends on if they're backed up with incoming SNAs and SNFOs. However, it seems like at this time of year they're moving guys through relatively quickly. So, expect a January start date...

Correct me if I'm wrong here, all...

You're pretty much spot on.

Since he is IFS complete, the people in flight management are gonna put him in a slot for his NAMI physical almost right away. The way I understand it, they are still hurting for bodies for the API classes (IFS output is pretty low, and the academy only has so many people to send down) He should start within a week or so of arrival at NASP.

This is kind of off topic, but it is an API follow-up question...

When do they find out where they will be going for Primary? I've heard some people say that you find out when you check in for API and I've also heard you don't find out until you are almost finished.

I would love for my fiance to stay in Pensacola, because its closer to me, but we won't be married when he checks in to API. I've heard conflicting reports about whether being married affects where you go for Primary. Can anyone shed any light?

I can tell you that being married usually means follow-on orders to Whiting for Primary and if it's not the case the married student can usually get his detailer to change things as long as he is married by the time of graduation from API. However, being that you two won't be married, it might be a toss up. Help here any single SNAs who've been through it already...

Don't hurry your marriage just for the sake of him staying in P'cola.

Oh I'm not...the wedding date was set before the API report date. I figure if he just breezes in for the weekend and we get married on Saturday and leave on Sunday to head back to Corpus or P'Cola, then the wedding will be a success. I just meant that if I had a choice I'd rather him be within driving distance of the wedding as opposed to requiring a plane ticket.

But it certainly wouldn't be the end of the world either way. :p

On another note, it sounds like you guys won't have time for a honeymoon right away...if you're wondering when to do it, I have some friends who took theirs recently after he finished Primary (got married in May). Just in case you were wondering, that's a great time to take a trip for a week or two. Just have him apply for leave in transit to his next duty station after Primary...

just a little tidbit I thought you might be interested in...

Thanks for the info. We figured we wouldn't have time to take one, but its nice to know when would be a good time. These things are so hard to plan! I'm sure we will need all the good advice we can get!

Resurrecting this one as I'm heading to Pcola on the 11th...what's the wait like to start API right now? Is there one at all?? I know it can get long near the Spring graduation time (June-Oct???), but I hear reporting in January might mean starting up API right away...so, what's the word??

Thanks...

Are you IFS complete?

Well, depending on how long it takes to get your NAMI, and assuming they don't find anything wrong with you.. Probably between two weeks and a month, tops. That's just a ballpark based on what I'm seeing and hearing. Could be more, could be less. Don't plan on sitting around on your ass for a long time, though.

2 weeks to a month sounds about right...hopefully it's the latter so I can have time to train my dog how not to crap in the house (sad, but this is a big concern for me right now...haha)...

Seriously though, can't wait to finally get the Flight School train chugging! Yea, more studying!! (Atleast it's studying with a purpose...damn grad school...)
