Kel-Tec Sub 2000 or PLR

Anyone familiar with with the PLR (.223 long range pistol) or the Sub 2000 (9mm or 40 cal carbine?

Looking for a new toy. I'm leaning towards the Sub because my carry weapon is 9mm and ammo is pretty cheap for it.

I got to mess with a PLR and it was a pretty cool toy but other then being a "hey check this out" gun its practicality is pretty much nothing. About the only way I could think of one being useful would be if you were a rancher or something and wanted a light weight highly portable weapon with a caliber mean enough to knock down any varmits (you dont shoot badgers with pistols!). Havent messed with a Sub 2000 but Ive never heard anything particularly bad about them.

Anyone familiar with with the PLR (.223 long range pistol)....

Yes ... I like it big time. Much better product than similar AR-style "pistols". Didn't think I would, but w/ a rail, red dot optics, a laser and white light combo, sling, AR-birdcage flash suppressor --- a fun little package to shoot. It accepts all AR magazines.

It would be PERFECT with the addition of a folding vertical fore end ... but you know how the FEDs would get excited about that kinda stuff .... and that's a whole 'nother world of regulations you don't want to get involved with .....
:) ... you can just grab the front end of the magazine.

My buddy has a PLR and it is fun to shoot. However, 9mm ammo is cheaper and you may have a fun time trying to find somewhere to shoot it. There's only one local range that lets him. They say it's too powerful for the pistol range, but it's not a rifle so he can't shoot it there either, even at 25 m.

And this is in TEXAS???!!!

I'm gonna have to take back what I've said that Texas is the most gun-friendly state in the Union. Of course, Texas is its own Republic ....

Mebbe Nevada, Arizona, Idaho, etc., etc. ..... ???

I'm thinking about one for the home defense scenario. I have several firearms for "inside the house" protection. I'm thinking back to when Central Florida had 3 hurricanes roll through and I spent several nights ouside, with no power, making sure the goblins didn't decide that my house was a convienance store. The PLR doesn't have the range of a good rifle, but then, anything past 25 yards outside isn't "self-defense" :icon_wink

Quite correct .... and remember the LA Watts riots and, of course, Katrina & the Big Easy amongst others???? .... You have to be able to defend YOURSELF. What happens to your 911 phone call when the next big earthquake, tornado, hurricane, terrorist attack, or Rodney King .... you pick it "event" takes place .... ???

The cops are not constitutionally required to protect you and cannot be held liable for not doing so .... surprise, surprise, America.

Again, I thought I would NEVER buy a KelTec-anything .... and since I didn't like the AR-style "pistols" I thought I'd never own one of these .223-type "pistols". BTW, .223/5.56mm is getting expensive.

BUT: I've grown to appreciate this particular item and I've run @ 300 rounds through it without a failure of any kind. Mine is a little differently set up than this picture -- C-More red dot, Streamlight TLR-2 white/laser combo, H&K sling, Colt magazines ... I think that's about it.

If I were interested in home defense, I'd use it. And a pistol. And a shotgun.

Just free association here .... just thinkin' out loud .... that's all.
