Know of a good place in Yoko?

First of all, where are you going, Atsugi or Yokosuka? If you're working at one, you don't want to live at the other. It can be 1-2 hours driving depending on traffic. Second, there are literally thousands of places to live in both areas, so don't worry about it until you get there. It's nothing like the States. I mean that in good way. Landlords there are usually really helpful and I've never heard a story of someone being treated unfairly. After you get there you can go to the housing office and they have lists of places commonly rented by Sailors. The housing office even used to have van tours of a number of places to rent, but that was a few years ago, so I can't say for sure if that's still done. Long story short, don't sweat it.
I just got to Yokuska and a friend is going to Atsugi. I'm not worried about getting screwed over, just looking for some feedback ie "I lived here and it was great but a friend lived here and they were closer to the beginning of a line so the trains were less crowded.." or something. Never hurts to have too much knowledge especially since I won't have a lot of time to look around and make a decision. Thanks!
A bunch of my fellow JOs had places down in Zushi. I lived on base at Ikego. So, no real recommendations on locations.
Biggest piece of advice, if living out in town, make sure that wherever you decide is close to a train station (easy short walk) AND you have a parking space that will be sufficiently large enough to accomodate whatever vehicle you have (or are going to get).
There were two JOs that lived in Yokohama, they enjoyed the night scene there, I don't want to think about the commute!! We had one guy (LDO) that transferred over from Atsugi, and commuted everyday, he didn't seem to mind the train ride.

I live at Atsugi and commute everyday to Yoko for work. The mornings are good because I leave Atsugi at 0500 and there's no traffic, but going home is another story. I could leave at 1300 one day and not get home until 1600 or leave the same time another day and get home at 1400.
The train ride isn't bad from the Atsugi area to Yoko, but it's going to take you an hour+ depending on when you go and what route you take (there are 2 lines that access Yokosuka from Yokohama).
Webmaster had some good advice. I'd live in Yokohama if I were you. The commute for you won't be that bad, and for your friend going to Atsugi it'll only be a half an hour straight shot on one line (same for you, no changing trains...your commute will just be slightly longer..maybe 45min). You'll be close to some great food, entertainment, and really central to other train lines when it comes to doing stuff in Tokyo and surrounding area.
And there's always the option of getting a 2nd place in Tokyo for the weekends, we know a few single guys who do that.
I also commute by road bike from Atsugi to Yoko sometimes as well and it takes about 2 hours. The only thing scary is the Yankee plates

Are you and your friend planning on rooming together? The only reason I ask is the rules for OHA are different than BAH. In the states you can both bag BAH and split the rent, but it's not like that with OHA. Just keep that in mind. Like I said before, check out the housing office to find out what's available. What constitutes a good place to live depends on your needs: night life, beach, peace and quiet, etc. There's lot's of beautiful areas close to the beach between Yokosuka and Atsugi, just depends on what you want. Whatever you find, I'm sure you'll enjoy your tour. I hope to get back there someday myself. Good luck.

No, we are both trying to get apartments of our own, thanks for the info bb1125. Yokohama sounds ideal, thanks webmaster and helo_wifey, at the inbrief today they tried to discourage us from living that far away but it is good to hear that there are people who make it work. Yokosuka is a little small for me, but I don't think I party hard enough to warrant a bachelorette pad in Tokyo (though maybe if there are enough JO's willing to go in... :devil_125).

They probably warned you at INDOC, but I haven't seen any base or area more out to find and hammer any drinking related incidents. DON'T drink and drive.... They have the breathalyzers and wands out, my record was three "random" stops on the way home from work on a friday night. Stopped at the main gate to Yokosuka, stopped at the gate to Ikego, and stopped at a checkpoint pulling into my housing area!! For the love of god!! I was in khakis, and kind of lost my cool with the final MA (or whatever rate it is now a days)... Anyways, a week didn't go by that I didn't hit one of those check points, granted I usually worked late (damn 1120s!)... Just don't take that risk there, coupled with the lower BAC... ugh... they used to show the latest person (spouse, dependant, DOD employee, etc) caught on the billboard. They were talking about doing away with that before I left... anyways, off topic, my two cents.

Sorry guys, the neighborhood has officially been invaded. If it helps my case any, I'm totally in favor of keeping the AWGs as an optional uniform (for aviators only of course, I'm proud of my black shoes!)webmaster, I have been fully pounded with the don't drink and drive message, in fact it seems any kind of drunkenness outside of your home is pretty strongly discouraged so I'll be giving my liver at least a brief respite. The message makes sense; it’s just ironic since the Japanese citizens seem to have NO problem with their own public drunkenness and no open container laws for the Japanese citizens. Thanks for the warning, I’ll be the poster child for the “None For The Road” program

Edit: Do you have any clue what the hosts/hostesses shout at you when you leave any resturant here? Sometimes it sounds like arigato gozymous but not always. My sponser doesn't know either but it's friendly and really amusing to sit and watch (they shout at everyone who leaves)!
