Learjet crash

NTSB says they found parts of the elevator 3+ miles away. Structural failure from extreme turbulence?
The US Navy lost a T-39 on a Low Level back in April 2010. The tail snapped off. They found the tail about 5 miles from the crash site, so it’s conceivable that if the elevator departed the aircraft, it would land quite a ways away from the crash site.

NYT reported that tail was found nearly 4 mi away from the Lear crash site. The why is another question, especially considering wx and speeds they reached in the descent.
