Lenth of deployment on a small boy?

What is the typical length of a deployment if you are in a helo squadron/det on board a small boy?

If I go helos then I would like to go into the HSC community...they are on board small boys more than CVs right?

HSL/HSM is the "small boy specialists" but can do small deck and CV.

If you are with a CVBG, your cruise is as long as the CV's.

If you are independent ops, CD-OPS, UNITAS, BALTOPS, etc, it can be 3-7 months.

Hmmm!

All of us navy types understand what you mean by the lingo small boy.

I wonder what a stranger who happened upon your thread title might think about this place.

As long as they need you there....gonna depend on what the boat is doing. There are now two types of HSC, Expeditionary and CVW. HSC (exp) will go on USNS ships and LHDs. HSC (CVW) will be on carriers much like the current HS.

USNS is out for long cruises... the occasional cross-deck will still happen. HSC (exp) will also deploy on LCS along with Fire Scout. Or so sayeth ye olde master plan.

Will the HSC (exp) and HSC (CVW) missions be covered by different squadrons, or will it just be a cruise-by-cruise sort of thing?

as far as i understand it, squadrons that used to be HC squadrons will be HSC (exp) and squadrons that used to be HS will be HSC (CVW).

AHAHAHAHAHA!:D

Well, I don't know how many of you guys know your helo squadrons but over the summer I was stationed in San Diego with HSC-21 Blackjacks...freakin loved it. If I get my choice I would like to be in this squadron because I like the mission they fly, like that they fly the new MH-60S, have the new weapons mod. If I remember correctly I know that they are based on destroyers. They did a medivac det a few months ago in Iraq but I don't know too much else.

So, is the average deployment 6 months? When you get back is it 6 months off? Just trying to get a better feel for my potential future.

You're remembering incorrectly. Deployments can be 6 months or they can be less. Or they can be more. When you get back, you could be back for 6 months or more. Or less. Getting the picture?

I belive that under the new helo plan, the "front office" for the HSC and HSM will be on the Boat, handy for CAG and the Admiral to yell at. So they may rotate folks in and out of the other boats and back to the Big Boat.

How they'll handle the dets for independant-ops deployments, I'm not sure.

From what little i know about the HSM community that is the theory. They squadrons will now deploy as a squadron with the wing to the carrier and then they will be pimped out to the various boats in the battle group. Like you said the CO and XO will go with the squadron and have a better eye on things.

HSC does not get based on destroyers. We can fly to and land on destroyers easily, but we don't do det on them (not that we couldn't, I guess, we just wouldn't be too useful). 21 did do the Air Ambulance thing, but that gets passed around between 21, 23, and 25 (not sure if someone's ever going to "own" it).
