King went to flight school at age 50. His biography notes that his flying ability as "erratic" and quoted the commander of the squadron with which he flew as asking him if he "knew enough to be scared?" Still he did an average of 150 a year. Better yet, he commanded surface ships, submarines, and aircraft carriers! Imagine trying to do that today.Both
King was arguably the most powerful USN officer ever. During WWII he was dual hatted as the Commander In Chief, US Fleet and CNO. So he most certainly left the cockpit.Both
