One thing that hasn't been mentioned in this thread yet is the situation with the I-10 bridge Post-Ivan. The original plan was to have both eastbound and both westbound lanes open by December. Unfortunately, the Florida DOT decided the temp repairs to the eastbound bridge wouldn't support two lanes. The entire bridge will be rebuilt sometime in the next two years. For now, the two westbound lanes are open, but they have a divider between them and are limited to 45 MPH. Only one eastbound lane is open. The traffic backup stretches for miles sometimes on weekends and afternoons. The only other option is highway 90 throuh Pace and Milton, or backroads north of Pace/Milton. All are carrying extra traffic. Many people don't even bother with I-10 now because it's a crapshoot. Eastbound may be totally open, or 10 MPH backup. Pace and Milton are definitely best if you want to limit your commute. Also, housing prices, and I believe rentals, are generally cheaper. I would think long and hard about living farther west than Pensacola. I have friends at Governor's Gate (mentioned above) lately it's taken him almost an hour to get home from Whiting if there was any traffic. Usually, it's about 30-40 minutes. One final thought, My wife and I made a weekend trip to the east side of Mobile, the trip took 1.5 hours without traffic. It just takes longer to get from point A to Point B around here. Good luck to all in your house hunting.
