Lock Up Your Beer & Scotch... TheBubba And His Red Shoes Are COming To DC...

So the title says it all. I've got verbals to OPNAV. Detach in October, report in November. Waiting on the paper copies now.

Planning on heading East in July to checkout some 'hoods and reacquaint myself (briefly) with the area. Thinking about living in NorVA or Georgetown. We'll see how that works out.

So, either lock up your beer or give it up willingly. Same goes for the scotch.

With that, where are some of the better place to live? I'm looking for something on the Metro.

If you're in DC, see ya in November.

Cheers

The accepted abbreviation is NOVA, and only people who aren't from NOVA call it that. Enjoy living there, the mid atlantic is the pinnacle of western civilization, as near as I can tell.

I'm an East-Coaster. Grew up pretty much between Baltimore & Boston. Spent the most time north of Philly. It'll be good to get back "home" and close to Mini-Bubba.

NOVA it is. To me though, when someone says "Nova", the first thing i think of is Villanova Univ.

Believe it or not living in DC, other than Georgetown or the tony parts of NW, has become a viable option the past few years. I know a few people living in the Capitol Yards area near Nationals Stadium and they like it, just lack in amenities like grocery stores and bars.

Your best bet though is probably NoVA though and where depends on what you are looking for. If you are looking for a 'downtown' with plenty to do at most hours and an apartment or condo within stumbling distance Courthouse and Clarendon along with the surrounding areas in Arlington have been pretty nice places to be the past few years and as a LT you can find more than a few places to rent or buy with your BAH, housing prices in the DC area have stabilized and are slowly rising, not much of a rush if you want to buy....still pretty expensive though, just be prepared to recage.....and be prepared for the fees! The Metro is pretty convenient from that part of town, not much use if it doesn't go where you are working though (where?). Some parts of Alexandria are nice too but a little bit more scattered, I am not as familiar with that part of town though.

Maryland might be an option if you are on that side of the river, more suburban and you would have to look further out to avoid PG County though. Some of Montgomery is more 'urban' but I am not as much of a fan.

If you are looking for a house in the 'burbs that is a whole other story, you will have to look further out (maybe A LOT further out) or for a fixer-upper. Or the hood. I can give you plenty of advice on that if you want though.

One good resource I have found is a site called Redfin, for sales only but it gives you a good idea of what is out there in a easy to use format. You can search by county, city or zip code, for Clarendon and Courthouse you want to look at Arlington County. It is pretty comprehensive for the DC area and gives you a really good idea of what is out there, where and for how much.

PM me if you want to know more.

Agree with the Courthouse/Clarendon/Balston. You are going to want to check out Old Town Alexandria also. There's something about Maryland that rubs me the wrong way. Not sure what it is.

I want to avoid living in Maryland. PGC & Montgomery is a no-go. I've lived in Maryland before and have no real desire to live in MD right now.

I'll be working at either the Pentagon or the Annex building. At least that's what I've been told.

I'll be looking for at least a 2/2 condo or apartment to rent. Not looking to buy anything until I get my finances a little more stable. The primary reason I'm looking at NOVA is to be more convenient and closer to Mini-Bubba.

Flash, thanks for the website. I'll browse it and see if it helps.

Cheers

Don't hold your breath, dude. If I'm ever again in the NOVA/NoVA/NorVA/Norplant area, it'll be because DCA wants to "chat" with me from his end of the long green table.

If your planning on taking Metro to work, Old Town is better than Arlington. You can catch the Yellow or Blue from King St or Braddock Rd. Courthouse/Clarendon/Balston you will have to take an exteamly packed Orange and change trains in Rosslyn.

Gaijin,

Were I single, I would say hide your wives, girlfriends and daughters over the age of 21.

But alas, I will settle for drinking your scotch and beer. A minor tradeoff.

KBay, green tables suck. If you're ever on the DC area after I get there, we'll go get salads.
