Looking for Preparation

Given I'm still only a MIDN for the next 6 months, is there anyway that I can get a hold of the API publications. I heard that it is a good idea to dive into the publications well before API if at all possible, and I want to be well-prepared in advanced even before I learn if I'm Pilot or NFO. Is there any place I can get this information? Thanks yall.

Look no further than the bottom of a bottle.

API is NOT something that you need to prepare for.

Well, learn to speed pack your car so you can evac for hurricanes quickly and effectively- this is also good for the last minute dity move.

Buy a good bottle opener and stay proficient with it by using it often.

Get sunblock and learn to apply it, and get a good pair of sunglasses for the beach.

Just get a copy of the coastie gouge sometime when you get there and all will be good.

Taz,

Prepare if you REALLY want to but I HIGHLY recommend to use your free time doing anything than reading up on the API material...because you'll definitely have time for that later on. What you won't have time for is "free time". So enjoy yourself now.

If you're worried about the material, don't sweat it too much because it is geared for non-engineering students...like me. As long as you study and focus during API, you'll be just fine, especially now the passing grade is back down to 80.

If you have any questions, let me know. I'm in API right now.

Thanks for the link hooverpilot, and I already went there. I was actually looking for a hard copy, but this works. Last brief wee got in ROTC land said that the passing average was a 94%/ exam, which was startling. I just want to get good grades, and get into primary in good standing. Just passing isn't good enough for me. As for living it up, I'm a senior in college and it doesn't get any better. I word hard and I play hard, but I work first. I got a swimming pool and hot tub, that I use quite often. Beach volleyball is a must. But eh, college life is coming to an end and I'm just ready to get tothe real Navy already. No more ROTC land for me, cuz it's getting, what's the word "tedious". Lol. Thanks for everything guys and I hope to see yall in the fleet.

Primary in good standing? I don't think anyone in primary ever cared how well we did in API, nor did they ever ask.

Ummm, your API grades don't factor into your NSS, by the way. In other words, even though they stay in your Aviation Training Jacket (ATJ) they have NO effect on your pipeline selection. API passing grades are still 80% regardless of whether you are an SNA or SNFO. That 94% stuff was from last Spring when I was in API and they were cutting SNA's by raising the minimum API NSS (which, again, is NOT the NSS that determines your pipeline selection). API is fun; relax, study when you're actually in the classes and just get through API. You'll need to recall about 2% of what you learn there. Everything you really need is introduced in Primary and builds from there. Seriously, all MID's out LISTEN TO ME!!!!!!! stop worrying about API. How many times do the guys who have actually been there need to say it?

It absolutly shocks me how slow Gouge moves. Even if you still needed a 94% (was it ever that high?), studying 6 months ahead of time would be useless.

Taz, I was pretty stressed out about API for a couple of reasons. First, I had no aero/flying background. Second, I never really developed a 'good' study habit. And third it was kinda intimidating. Before starting TBS I secured a job at Manpower and ran into a Maj (Cobra pilot) there and he just happened to have all the API pubs and let me make a copy of them. The couple of weeks I waited around to start API, I read through them once just to get familier with the info. Then I would read the material covered the next day the night before, then read it again when I got home from class. This was an overkill, but I did well. It's easy to sit back, having completed flight school and say "don't worry about API" but if the minimum grade average is anything like it was a few months ago then I can't really blame you for wanting to study.

My attitude through flight school was "the only way I'm leaving flight school is by being dragged by my feet, kicking and screaming". It won't take you long and you'll figure out what it takes for YOU, studying wise, to get through the program with the grades you want.

Good luck!

THERE IS NO MINIMUM OTHER THAN 80%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now that I have reemphasized this VERY important and misreported point.....

E5B has a really good point about adopting an attitude of "dragging me out kicking and screaming". Flight school is what you make of it, but I'm just putting it out there that API is nothing to worry about. The program is designed for the English/History major who doesn't know anything about Physics or Math...like me. As an Advanced Standing NROTC guy I never had to take Calc or Physics. I never looked at the books prior to the weekend before API started and I am not exactly the smartest guy around. But when I study, I study. Worry about time management and you'll do fine.

API is easy

Ok..have fun while still in college..API is really a vacation before primary..its fun and you dont have to worry about passing grades..80% is very achievable..and its worth almost nothing in the overal NSS for selection after primary. Have fun...hit up the beach and go see the wet t shirt contest at flounders friday night!!
