....While thats any easy card to play, remember they are doing it between two very solid concrete walls.

I don't know whether or not it's an"easy card to play" as that's what HE said ... and I would suppose he knows whereof HE speaks. He certainly knows a hell of a lot more about racing cars than I ... and I would assume much more than YOU, as well. :)

For me -- I can tell you that your "concrete walls" are chump change compared to rolling onto your back and entering a 500 KIAS 60 degree visual dive w/18 Mk82's hangin' on the wings --- w/ a bunch of Gomers taking severe AAA umbrage at what you're preparing to do to them.

For that matter -- your "walls" are chump change compared to landing on USS BOAT at night ....

Or bringing a 630,000# 747 safely onto the wet and X-wind slammed runway 13 @ KaiTak compliments of Typhoon "X" that's just been chasin' your ass across the South China Sea for the past few hours ....

Want more?? There's LOTs more ...

Racing cars?? It's fun ... and sometimes exhilarating if it's anything akin to racing boats.

But please ... racing boats OR cars is chump change compared to flyin' low, fast, hard, or just GOOD, for that matter.

I guess it's reality check time for someone. :)

I have to ask, who cares? It's really apples to oranges. And before you get defensive, I've been racing karts since I was 8. Started in 4 cycle gold restrictor plate and progressed all the way up to my current ride, my 125cc shifter kart Moto class engine, (TaG and the ICC motors suck). I even talked to a few Toyota Atlantic teams briefly.
Here's the kicker: after all those years of racing, as soon as I started flying, I stopped racing. In the end, you can go in circles or a straight line with a car or kart. In the air, I'm faster and can go anywhere I want (with clearance, but you get my point: up, down, left, right, loop, figure 8, etc.) My kart hasn't seen a track in almost 3 years cuz it's just plain boring compared to flying. To answer your question though, anyone can do the job with enough seat/stick time and the proper training.

I think he was asking about military flying. GA flying? Who cares but please, don't get defensive.

Defensive I am not, sir. I was merely offering my opinion on the subject since he asked the question. I thought I could offer a unique perspective since I have sat on both sides of the fence. Even as a crew chief, I enjoy bending wrenches on the Eagle way more than a car. While I'm not a military pilot (yet, :icon_wink) even the limited acro training I have had makes racing not appealing to me anymore. IMO, jets and all other aircraft are just better.

You see, I thought it was a good question and it was obvious as to what type of flying he was comparing to. Unless it's comptetitive aero flying, I don't think GA flying compares. Someone comes in and says who cares had better have the credentials to back it up I think.

Well then I guess we agree to disagree, sir. As far as my credentials are concerned, I have multiple class championships and raced competitively on the SKUSA (SuperKarts USA!) circuit in the SouthEast region for many years. I had an offer to race with Jensen Motorsports in SCCA Formula Atlantic with an option to move to the pro Toyota Atlantic series with their team if I performed well. I wasn't able to raise the $80,000 Mr. Jensen wanted me to bring to the table. I was 21, went flying again after a long time out of the seat and promptly joined the Guard. I still think it's apples and oranges, but hey that's just my opinion. I prefer to fly, GA, acro, whatever. I still don't think the two can be compared on a level basis. Once again, it's my preference-he asked for input, so I gave mine.
I get more satisfaction after busting my ass to get a jet ready that was down for a long list of gripes and seeing it fly than playing with a kart these days. Maybe I've grown up a bit. Now I'm not in this to get into a pissing contest with you sir. I was answering your question, so now I say good day. :D

Very nice resume, I didn't ask for it however. The credentials had to do with military flying, not racing and I was pretty clear about that. The question had to with if one has the ability to race will they have the ability to fly...at least that's how I saw it. Being he was asking the question on a website for Naval Aviation, military flying is where his curiosity lay. There is no pissing contest, in this situation, I'm going to win this one every time.

While I could continue to dispute it, I'll just take your word for it, since that's a reality check I look forward to! :D

Allthough it was a great episode, In all fairness comparing a porky road car (a VERY fast one none the less) to a Eurofighter is not exactly fair.... I think this is a more appropriate question......

.....and even more relevent to this forum, two American vehicles, CART Reynard vs. F/A 18.

The direction this thread took is kind of crazy. Does being a racecar drive mean you will be a good pilot? Probably not considering being a pilot many times doesn't mean you will be a good military pilot. Alot of being good at either is having the right attitude and being able to learn and apply what you are being taught. Every individual is probably going to take to it differently. I think the big link between pilots and racecar drivers is that we are both type A personalities. Most pilots enjoy fast cars and fast driving. Alot of racecar drivers enjoy airplanes.

I raced karts for 5 years first locally, then regionally, and finally nationally. Did it help my flying? Probably not, I don't know. You could ask my onwing.:D

And comparing a jet on takeoff roll with a racecar specifically designed to accelerate I think is silly, especially if you won't let him use afterburner (as it appeared in the F-18 vid). Let an F1 car accelerate to speed and then let a hornet fly by him at full speed. The shockwave will probably knock its wheels off...

Folks who know me know I love fast cars and race my modified C6 quite a bit but unfortunetly thus far, just drag racing. Entered my first contest for trophy and money and got my ass handed to me as well  So I suck at drag racing (250+ passes on my current ride) so not sure what that says about my flying?? I mean I've only crashed once :icon_tong I tell ya what though, I certainly wouldn't mind racing my Vette around the twisties. Just no time and no tracks for that around here. As my wife would say, last thing I need is another hobby.

I missed this post, trust me your wife is right, unless you want to go broke whatever you do, don't try racing or track days! First you'll need a helmet, then you'll need to spend money on suspension, then you'll need track tires, then you'll need a trailer since your cars no longer street legal, then you'll need a truck to tow the trailer, then your car will be so fast you need a cage and seats, then you'll decide to go racing......

I don't think I was asking if some how magically due to my racing background could hop into a plane and be great right away. More like would the skills developed over years of racing be significantly advantagous and relevent to military flying?

On your third point, obviously the comparison is meaningless, but that doesn't make it any less entertaining.
