Hey guys,
ive been going through the application process for Marine sna. Just was curious about some stuff. If you get jets, does that mean that you will be on a carrier? Are there marine helos on carriers? What are the benefits of being an NFO compared to a pilot. Are NFOs destined to become extinct? Im class of 2010 Will i have a chance to fly F-35's if im an NFO or SNA? Just curious because in the next couple weeks im probably going to be contracting. Finally, do OSO's get more slots for air or whatever now that its 2007? Thats alot of questions. sorry!

You will be either on carriers or at a ground base. I'm sure there are Marine helos on carriers. Dunno about the rest.

If your going PLC, hopefully I'll see you this summer.

Marine helos go ashore or on L-Class ships..

Navy Helos on the CV are currently an HS squadron or HSL-47 (the one CV HSL squadron).

IN the future it will be Airwing HSM squadrons.

2007 has nothing to do with it...the military operates on Fiscal years, the new one won't start for a little while yet...Sept, I believe..

As for the future of Marine NFOs, this has been done to death here, so do a quick search for details, but the odds are that once the D model Hornets and the Prowlers go away, there will be no Marine platforms that employ NFOs - likely before 2020 at the very latest, probably closer to 2015.

So whenever the NFOs go out of style, what would happen to them? Im assuming they would get a ground job. Im trying to decide between NFO and SNA so i guess SNA would be a better career choice as long as UAV's dont put them to pasture.

Or you could just divorce yourself from the infantile desire to be a Marine and sign on to the Navy where the future of both designators is equally strong. Sure the Marines' entry standards are lower, but think of the price you'll pay in increased, unwanted and frankly unnecessary BS once you hit the fleet. :D

Since noone else will answer the poor (misguided) kid's questions...

If you get jets, does that mean that you will be on a carrier?
Negative - You can fly the F/A-18C or EA-6B and be carrier based or fly the F/A-18D and be shore based, or the A/V-8B Harrier and be based on an LHA/LHD.

Are there marine helos on carriers?
None. Marine helos are only based on LHA/LHD, or shore based. They may be "split decked" onto a LSD/LPD - but that's WAY too far in your future.

What are the benefits of being an NFO compared to a pilot. Are NFOs destined to become extinct?
None, and Yes. Sorry, couldn't resist. I can't answer to the benefits, but I really don't think that NFO's are going to be extinct in my lifetime.

Im class of 2010 Will i have a chance to fly F-35's if im an NFO or SNA?
Not until you're probably a Major, just the cold, hard truth.

Finally, do OSO's get more slots for air or whatever now that its 2007?
OSO's work off of Fiscal Year, not Calendar Year, so when they do get slots - it's in October. Having never been an OSO, I'd assume that "higher headquarters" gets the billets for the year, and then filters them down to the OSO's once per month. Anyone been an OSO can answer this?

Don't mean to quabble with a field grade/hinge... However, the Marines ASVAB requirements are higher than the Navy's, and the Marines require a higher ASTB score as well. So - your argument is moot. SOMEONE has to scrape paint, even if it isn't you.

Hey, I'm still a LT. Why do you want to go and insult a shipmate like that? ;)

Stick with the Marines... the BS is worth it and you can go on steal Brett's bicycle one day ;)

Now that I'm wise to your ways, I'm not giving you that opportunity again. Suffice it to say that the squadron to which I have orders will be in Iwakuni this summer and they've already been issued fair warning on the bikes.
