May boards

Well, I didn't get rolled per say, but actually MEPS brought some medical things up in January that shouldn't have been and it kept me out until March. Then, I knew I was stil overweight but was right at body fat limits. But for whatever reason no one can measure it the same way, so when it looked like I would be good to go in March for the April boards they said that my BF was actually higher - even after the 20 pounds I've already lost. So it's down to me losing the 4 pounds left by the end of the month and getting another MEPS physical since it's been 90 days already...

I'm 6'0", so my circumference value (CV) max is 22 - the same as my max bodyfat of 22%. My measurements starting out were 41 and 17, with the CV of 24...the past month it's been around 38 and 17, so CV of 21 and under the limit. However, MEPS says the BF is at 23% still and my recruiter 26% - with their measuremets both of 40 and 17. They act like they have a calculator to come up with the info, but going by the chart online it's pretty straight forward...however, both of them didn't measure straight across but had the tape further down my back, resulting in larger waist measurements.

So when my doc and nurse friends and family do it they all get the 21 CV, but since the Navy guys don't I'll just have to wait until I lose the weight...I don't think they can screw up gravity to easily, unless a scale is out of calibration.

ASTB test

I am just starting my application for a nuclear engineering officer program. Can someone give me some details on what steps I need to take? Do I need to take the ASTB test and if so, how do I register?...

I am in that same position as well. I have not been to MEPS yet but I need to get my measurments down. My only problem is that I've lost around an inch around my neck so I went from 17 1/2 to 16 by my measurements. I've gotten my waist down but I need to go a little further. I hate the measurement system because I actually got water tested at 18 % before and I think that is far more reliable. Oh well, got to do it the Navy way.

Actually I've heard that they accept the water test method if you go out on your own dime to do it - similar to the guys who fail depth perception that have a civy doc pass them on a full exam - but I'm not for sure as to whether it's a rumor as I haven't seen or heard of a specific person doing it. If so I'd like to do that as well, as I know that I have less bodyfat than that...everyday that I do a good workout, I gain at least 1-2 pounds of muscle, so I've had to cut back the intensity to keep losing the weight lol...

i pretty certain i missed the april boards as my app was submitted late march, so i think i might be pushed to may

OCS - SWO only

27 years old in may
no prior service
ASTB 69/9/9/9
PRT - excellent low
B.A. Biology, 3.06 GPA, Colorado College
M.S. Human Genetics, 3.54 GPA, University of Utah
LOR's: O-3 navy pilot (retired), 2 professors (essentially bosses/supervisors)
~60 hr flight time in 172, just short of PP license
extracurriculars: martial arts in high school, served on disciplinary committee during college
MEPS - cleared, but that was more than 90 days ago... please don't make me go back

i applied for a nuke slot but didn’t even get an interview (at least i got a tour of an SSBN out of it), they didn't specifically say why except that the competition for nuke slots was "extremely competitive". i think it was because my academic background in physics and engineering was weak (i had decent grades, but only the very minimum prerequisite classes), but my processor thinks that the MIP i got when i was 19 might have been an issue.

You and me both...I hated that waste of 5 hours of life we'll never get back. Not to mention they're only there to DQ you if there's anyway possible.

SWO, it's too bad that you didn't get to apply soon enough to be under the age limit for SNA...you're the first person I've seen with a higher ASTB than mine (61/9/9/9). You don't want to consider NFO? Maybe get a chance in OCS to switch to SNA (several have done it)? With those scores I'd definitely be pleading up the chain for some pity if indeed you wanted to fly, but I completely understand if surface command is what you're looking for.

I'm going to be cutting it close as well, as if I graduate on time I'll be about 26 and 3 months at commissioning. Good luck at the boards.

i was told by my processor that i would almost certainly have to go back to MEPS to get fingerprinted again, as apparently fingerprints expire after a certain number of months. this is maybe the most ridiculous thing i have heard, i am quite sure my fingerprints look the exact same as they did 4 months ago.

i would be interested in switching to NFA or NFO (i think i would dig SWO though, pirate hunting sounds like a blast) but at this point, all i am looking for is a positive pro-rec for a line officer position. it took them 3 months to tell me that i wasn't going to get an interview at naval reactors, if i get turned down for SWO as well, so be it, but dont wait 3 months to tell me.

i spend most of my time nowadays worried that something is completely wrong with my package and thats why i didnt get picked up for nuke. anybody have any idea what time of the month we should be expecting some feedback?

I'm putting in for May boards too, BDCP though. Taking the ASTB on the 27th (pushing the deadline) and my brain is just about fried. Trying for Intel or SWO-IW. 21 yrs old, haven't done the physical yet, but not expecting any problems there.

irish, if you're not submitting your package until after the 27th, i doubt you'll make the may boards. i didn't get my app in until early this month; though technically i met the deadline for the april boards, i'm almost positive that i got pushed to may, though i have yet to coax that information out of my OR.

The deadline is the first of the month, so as long as it is in their possession by May 1 he's good to go. Occassionally there's some sneaky ones who get it in on the 2nd or 3rd and still get seen, but that's on a light month with fewer applicants and very much the exception. Also on that note, if there's a ton of applicants (which there very well may be, you never know) then even if you get it to them a week ahead of time it still may not be enough.

I'm not for sure if they've reverted back to only viewing the first 50 applicants per board (they stopped after the holidays due to a backlog since there were no December boards), but hypothetically if there's 200 apps in front of you and you're 201, it could be 5 months down the road until your application even gets reviewed, much less accepted. Hence the reason your OR's tell you to "apply as early as possible" and the good ol' "hurry up and wait". So just get it in as complete as possible with the best of your best stats, and see what happens.
