Midshipman escapes Kenyan riots

Lack of cars definitely ain't the problem there now. Nairobi during rush hour (0600-2300) is something to behold. You can watch a two-lane opposing-traffic road turn into a four-lane one-way road in the space of about 10 minutes. Traffic's stopped up, so someone pulls out into the shoulder to try and push ahead. The shoulder gets stopped up, so then someone pulls into the opposing lane and starts blaring their horn at those with the gall to be coming the other way. So three lanes are jammed up, and then people start pulling into the opposite shoulder until that gets stopped up. It's really breathtaking.

"Standing quietly in line" is also not a big concept in these parts. Emaciated 80-year-old grannies will start throwing elbows like it's a rugby scrum.

I was in Nairobi and Mombasa in August ... 1974

Speakin' of Kenyan riots .... and we almost started a riot @ the Tamarind Restaurant (M-Bassa) when we couldn't pay for what turned out to be a $400 dinner. :eek::eek:

$400. For 4 guys .... in 1974 dollars. :eek::eek:

It was forever known in the AirWing as the "Night of the Golden Lobsters" ... :D

Surf & turf, Kenyan style ... we thought the lobsters -- the sumo wrestlers of all lobsters we'd ever seen -- were priced by the pound. By the pound, makes sense, yea-as ? -- they were, in fact, priced by the GRAM :eek: ... and I suspect the "steak" was water buffalo. But it was very tasty after 60 days at sea ...

Ergo, "The Night of the Golden Lobsters" ... :)

Note to self.. When in M'bassa, DONT EAT ON A BOAT!
Momma didn't raise no fool. No boats, especially no local dhows .... that's a tourist thing-y that's evidently crept onto the scene since '74. The Tamarind was just the restaurant then -- and very nice too; a local ex-pat gathering/watering spot of high repute. :)
