Yup, think of the gas you blow driving from Pcola 5 days a week, as well as the time that is completely wasted. Would you rather have a short drive home, study a little while, and then wake up at a later time? Or would you rather have a long drive home, barely study because you're too tired, and then wake up retardedly early. Driving to Pcola on the weekend is NOT A BIG DEAL. Seriously, it's only two days, and if you pass out drunk somewhere, it's only 1 day really ;) Save the time and money and live in Milton. Plus, a house is infinitely better than an apartment anyday.

ollies?? if that is it, we found it the day we got here. About the closest thing to a bar (other than the rusty nail) in this town... hot bartenders!!

Have you been in the Rusty Nail yet? Duuude.....It was the best bar ever! I met the hottest chick ever, right up there with the sorority sister of that chick you used to date.

There was an Ollies in B'ham AL. It was a great BBQ joint. Must not be the same chain...

I've read this thread and realize that Milton isn't the greatest place to live but I still have a few questions.

My wife is a nurse so I'm looking for an area that has a good size hospital that will most likely be looking for nurses, are there hospitals within 15-30 minutes?

I NEED a house with a garage, are houses hard to find with one (I know in Florida its all about the carport)? I just wouldn't feel safe keeping my toys in a carport plus I have a bunch of tools. We also have a dog so some sort of yard would be the best situation. Any recommendations for real estate agents? We may even be looking to buy, then hold on to the property for investment puposes but renting a house is always an option.

I have orders to P-cola for August 4th so when should we fly down to check the area out? For right now we are looking at the middle of June.

I just need to clear up the drive time situation. Since I'm married it looks like API in P-cola and Primary at Whiting. The way I see it (tell me if I'm wrong) is Primary is more important than API so driving an hour to API everyday is better than driving an hour to Whiting. I'm also not too concerned about the social aspects because I hope to be pretty much all business while I'm there. So does Milton sound about right for me? Thanks.

Yea I believe there are 2 major hostpitals in the Pcola area....
And yes primary is MUCH more important than API... When youget to API they are going to tell you how it effects your NSS a certain percent. When I got my slecetion results, the only grades on the card were those of primary.

Base housing (whiting) has security to get in the gate. It is a carport, but there is limited access to the community. and no it is not on the base itself. I do not live there, but it looks nice from the outside.

I agree about housing, I think it's the best kept secret in the military. We're here at Whiting Pines and so far we love it. I must say though, the houses are pretty small. The 2 BR are 960 sq ft and that hurt, especially coming from 1700 sq ft (2BR) at Corpus. There is a trade off though, yes the houses are small but the community is awesome. We weren't in the house a few hours and 6 or 7 couples came over to introduce themselves. Corpus had the nicest housing I've ever seen, but the worst community, people would rush in their house from their car just to avoid talking to you. I was hoping I'd get here and get a 3 BR being that I have 2 dogs, 1 kid and another on the way. oh well

There is a huge playground right behind my house for the kiddos with a pool, kiddy pool, tennis court, mini PX, and basketball court. It's really not a bad deal. The back yards aren't fenced but you can purchase/rent your own and put it up, that'll be a project for next weekend.

oh yeah, and the drive is only 5-7 minutes to work

Hey Mcaf, Id check out the Milton and the Pace areas. I have several buddies that lived in pace and its only about 15 min drive. They liked it and there were plenty of nice houses. As far as the hospital thing, make you wife drive the distance. You are going to be busy!

MY wife and I are closing on a house in Pace near the end of June. When we first started house hunting (and by we, I really mean she flew down there and did all the work), I was really wanting to try to stay in the 32514 zip code, otherwise known as Ferry Pass and the surrounding areas just north of the airport. It was much harder than I thought it would be to find a house that met all of the criteria we were looking for. So I finally said let's just check out Pace and I'm glad we did. Sure, the drive to NASP for the first few months won't be that great, but I'm sure I can find a way to make the best out of the time on the road. Once I transfer to Milton however, we should be money. We're not too far from all the shopping and stuff in P'cola, about the same distance to the beach, and still not living in the redneck riviera that is Milton. Pace is growing from what I understand and so we're hoping that the value of our house will rise. We're also looking it as a potential rental income if we can't get what we will want for it right away.

On another note, if you're single, don't live in Pace. Just my opinion of course. If I was single, I would just stay in the Q, unless I could find a place which I could make money on with BAH. But the BOQ is sweet, you get treated like royalty. Besides, being in the Q means you got a tap on the party wire. I've missed out on a lot of fun with my fellow Ensigns simply because I don't live with them. Oh well, I'm jumping off the soapbox now. Who's next??

Did you stay in the Q in milton?? IT BLOWS!!! yes it is new and nice looking, but the walls are just for show, you can hear everything through the walls, all NIGHT LONG. Even on a 1bedroom apt you can make money off your BAH, and if you get a roomate you can bank half of your BAH.

Well, no, I haven't been in Milton at all. And yes, if I could find a way to make money with BAH I would do it. But, you gotta agree. Those guys and girls who stay there have a leg up on flight training being so close to the sims and squadron. So, if you can suck it up, it is probably benficial. On that note, I'm not staying there. HA

Let's just leave with with ... "I haven't been to milton at all." This entire site is full of people with no experience giving people advice on situations that could make their lives a lot harder or easier. Why on Earth would recommend something to someone when you have NO EXPERIENCE in that area???

As far as people living in the Q having a leg up, I live 3.5 miles from base, and b4 that I lived in the q for a month. There is no difference, except for the fact that now I enjoy my home and can study in a quiet place when I need to (instead of hearing the loud ass marine next door blow his nose everyother minute). That being said, there are some who will say they did better in the Q becuase they had nothing else to do except to study. When you got enough self control to make yourself live somewhere that sux so you can study, then I argue that you could live somewhere nicer and force yourself to study.
