Misc. NKO questions

So I've heard that there are NKO courses that OCS candidates take. Are they required before OCS? I've seen things that say yes and no, so if anyone knows for certain, I'd appreciate it. (I'll bother my recruiter if nobody knows, but he's a busy guy.)

Also, what status are candidates supposed to be in NKO? I'm listed as an active-duty PO2 without a rate, and the only course that shows up in my learning plan is the online intro to SERE course. Again, any words of wisdom appreciated. :D

They are not required before OCS. They don't take that long to complete (total of like 6-8 hours of work for 22 courses); they're mostly just a pain in the ass. There is a folder at OCS that has the required courses. If you have access now, do Naval History until you get a 100. It's the only course that counts toward your academic average.

NKO is boring but easy. Driving for life sucked though. You get time to do it before you graduate, and hopefully a study guide is still floating around...

I havent been to OCS yet so I dont know what is required, but the website for Officer Training Command: Newport, Rhode Island has a link to OCS that says Academic Prerequisites.

https://www.netc.navy.mil/nstc/otcn/OCS/index.htm

It has a list of general military and OCS required courses. I guess take it for what it is, and do what you want.

Are you joking me? I took the pretest for it in 5 minutes, got an 88, and didn't even have to take the course/test. Printed my certificate and moved on with my life.

I just had to do it again to check out of the wing, and I did the pretest again. No course.

You will most likely take the course again, so stand the fvck by!:)

I never really bothered with the pre-tests passed most of them first shot. For some reason that one just got me.

I'm having a bit of trouble logging on. I would contact the support team first but I received an email from them telling me that I can access E-Learning.

However, when I follow the instructions provided by my recruiter, after clicking on the E-Learning tab it brings me to a page with saying I do not have access, with about 20 various reasons on why that is.

The only reason I can think of is that though I have been Pro Rec'd, I am not yet Final Select. Has this happened to anyone else before? If not I will go ahead and contact their support team. Thanks in advance.

I had problems after swearing in logging in to do e-learning. I tried doing them at home and my security settings wouldn’t' let me view any of the E-learning stuff. If you follow the directions on the website, to allow the e-learning through your firewall that may solve your problem.

If problems still occur while you’re in limbo with swearing in, you can use a guest NKO account (have someone with ability to sponsor you), which can still credit to you I think.

Finally, using a CAC card (with the CAC reader of course) should give you the proper certificates to proceed.

This is all obsolete if you’re not final select yet, or even sworn in, but if you were wondering there it is.

I figured as much. In the directions it said you had to be final select. However, that was for sponsorship, which I got, even though I am not final select:confused:. I thought it may have been some other issue. It's good to know the real problem now. I guess once I become final select I'll have to email my sponsor. Thanks again yall.

Has anyone gotten NKO to work with anything other than internet explorer? I haven't done the courses yet because I keep running into problems with the page using safari and firefox. Anyone else had better luck?

NO. Firefox can't run it. And that blows. It forces me to keep IE instead of uninstalling which I'd love to do.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/59 (Firefox User Agent Switcher)

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927177 (IE7 uninstall instructions - which I *DO NOT* recommend as 1) it restores IE6 which you don't want and 2) XP Service Pack 3 will install IE7 anyways)

IE6 is hard-coded into Windows XP, and XPSP3 will force you to install IE7 anyways. I would not recommend trying to remove it, just set Firefox/Safari/browser-of-choice to default and move on. The only way to *truly* remove it is to slipstream an XP CD and even that is pointless because XPSP3 just reinstalls it anyways.

edit: the only time the Firefox User Agent Switcher won't work with IE-only websites is when it requires MS-specific protocols/"features" i.e. ActiveX applets.
