You can try, but the person in a command with a mishap should NOT be contacting people to tell them HE or SHE is OK.

If 34 out of 35 pilots call to tell their family and buddies they are OK, and the knives club starts calling each other, how long will it take for the unfortunate family to find out they didn't get a call before the CACO could formally tell them? Or even worse of 28 pilots out of 35 call, then 7 families are going to be freaking the fuck out, 6 for NO reason.

It may not make sense when you first hear it, but thinking about it, it makes a lot of sense.

Absolutely understandable. It's killer to folks who know people there and want so very much to know the people they knew weren't the casualties, but yes the protocol is important.
 
Prayers for the pilots and their families...keep them safe, bring them home...

As to protocol, OttoWrote8 is spot on...my Navy family is one of those that found out through the news channels and grapevine before the CACOs contacted us. My Navy pilot brother-in-law died in the 53 crash outside Corpus in Jan 08. A simple google search brought this thread to our attention as we are keeping our thoughts and prayers focused on those pilots and their families...
 
The best rule of thumb is to shut the fuck up and let the people do their jobs. Don't talk to media. Don't talk to friends. Don't make cell phone calls and try to count heads. Be a fucking professional and let the Casualty Assistance Process work.

For the people that don't know, the command has to issue the PCR's so that the various regions can assign CACOs to go knock on the door of the various Next-Of-Kin. That process takes time. The command's first priority is on the search and rescue, not getting a message out. When the message finally does get out, the regions alert their CACOs and brief them on the situation and provide the name and address of the NOK. The CACO has to get dressed, get in a car, find the next of kin, and knock on the door.

This incident happened around 3:00. Do you think that process was complete at 6:35 when the original post was made? Hell no. So fucking what if it is on another web page? Giving the information additional legs in a forum like this is contributing to the problem. Don't you think that parents of SNA's and even IP's read this site? Of course they do.

There is plenty of time in the days to come to offer prayers talk about your friends that are OK, or not OK. When an incident has just happened SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!!
