Any input on my Motivational Statement would be much appreciated. Currently going for IW.
I have come from a family with a strong military history. My late grandfather served as a Marine infantry during WW II. I remember listening intently to his stories about his military career and experiences; he was a personal hero. One thing he said had a profound effect on me. “The worst thing a man can do is stand by and do nothing.” This has always provided me with a good ground on making decisions. My father served as a Navy Pilot and through my childhood, has imbued me with the Navy core values, one of these being to protect and serve those who need it.
My desire to serve in the United States Navy began with the influence of my grandfather and father. I admire them and who they are as leaders in our family and community. Just as they were examples to me, I would like to carry on their tradition; to serve and protect my country and fellow countrymen. The men and women who served before me ensured the rights and freedoms that are part of our democracy and which are denied in many other countries. I hope to allow these rights and freedoms to persist in the future of our country. I know that as I serve in the Navy, I will not only be fulfilling a duty, but also learning to be a strong leader and professional. In short, learning and developing those characteristics I admired most in my family.
I see the Navy Officer Program as a conduit for strengthening my abilities as a leader and a way to serve and give back to this great country that has given me and my family so much. It will give me a chance to expand my knowledge of computers and constantly changing technologies of the world. I have developed a wide skill set when it comes to computers from both hardware components and software programming. My skill set would be a great asset to the Information Warfare community and in general any part of the United States Navy.
I have been preparing myself for this commitment and challenge both mentally and physically. I excelled at debate during high school, which helped sharpen my reasoning skills. I subsequently mentored the next generation of student debaters and served as a judge at Fairchild Botanical Garden events. In my first semester at Florida International University, I created the FIU Triathlon Team. I started competing in triathlons to test how far I could push myself. Using my expertise gained from two previous Ironman distance triathlons, I coached a group of new students. After months of coaching and teamwork, all students successfully finished as a team. I learned a great deal in having to motivate and support them, particularly those who did not believe they could finish. I enjoy the challenge of leadership and the difficulty presented by a difficult task or situation requiring group effort. For this reason I see the United States Navy as the perfect place for me to excel not only in service, but also leadership. I want to become an Officer with a steadfast determination to help protect the rights and freedoms that we have all enjoyed thus far, while constantly improving on my leadership and technology skills.
