Moving Questions for API

Whats up, alright I'm moving down to PCola for API here either June or Sept. I have been living in a apartment throughout college and have way too many things...Couch, desk, dresser...etc, bulky items that are a pain in the A$$ to move and things I really dont want to deal with if I dont have to; and I'm coming from Salt Lake City. What I have heard is that most single guys, if there is room, are being put in the BOQ for API. With all this, I am wondering what guys, or gals, have done with moving there things across country for API and after. Not how to do it, just should I or just get rid of all of it and get new things where ever I end up? Maybe Im just looking for some support and excuses to get rid of all my stuff so all I need to worry about is my TV and my PS3. Any advice from anyone would be great, thanks.

Might be a good idea to just get a cheap storage unit until you find out just what they're going to do with you. I'm pretty sure you don't have to stay in the BOQ, I don't even think they have any spots available for API studs. I would hang on to your stuff until you get down here, the cost of moving everything is on Uncle Sam anyways, why not?

Except that, for Navy guys, the unofficial official gouge is that they ARE required to stay in the Q. I second what Mike said, though. Hang on to it until you know if you're going to Corpus or if the Whiting Q fills up (not likely as of a few weeks ago).

I'm in your situation in a way. I just got my pro-rec for OCS and am expecting a date in late summer/early fall. For the record, I'm getting rid of everything I possibly can. There are a lot of moves coming up and would just as soon travel light and figure everything out later.

I was expecting on living in the 'Q though, based on most of the gouge going around. Good luck, I'll be paying attention to see what you did.

Put it into storage unless you want to move it with you to API at your own cost. Once you get orders to primary you can arrange a move from your original location to your permanent duty station. Unfortunately TMO failed to mention this to me during my moving appointment and all my stuff is stuck in Daytona Beach. I won't be eligible to get it shipped until I get PCS orders. Hope this helps.

Keep in mind that you are going to be at NASP for 3-6 months doing API and IFS. You're probably going to be living off base during that time. When I got to Pensacola they weren't making studs live in the BOQ at NASP and there wasn't even any availability if you did want to. I ended up living there for a few weeks while I was trying to find a place to live, but I had to book the room a couple days at a time. They wouldn't even guarantee me that I would be able to stay in my room more than a couple days out. I didn't see many other officers living there, so take that for what its worth. Currently they are making students live in the BOQ at whiting when and if they get sent there, but will they still be doing that several months from now when you get there? Who knows. I would hold on to your stuff for now. Let the Navy move it for you. Even if you don't have PCS orders, they will pay you to move up to 600 pounds of personal belongings I believe. Buying all new stuff will add up... and it leaves you with the most options.

Don't forget about your Home of Record move. The Navy will do one move from your HOR to your permanent duty station as long as the household goods are at home. I was reminded of this recently and wish I had known about it earlier.

Also, a piece of advice I have gotten from many officers, don't go buy all new nice stuff right away if you get rid of your old stuff. You will move many times while in flight training and buying nice stuff just leads to it getting damaged by the movers. Live like a college student for a couple more years, it will make moving easier and will save you money. Just think, all that money you save on furniture can be used for beer and pizza.

Well SLC is not my HOR, im from Portland, but been out here for school. My concern was whether or not I would be staying in the BOQ through API and if I wanted to bring all my old things with me or just get rid of it. But good advice all around. I know the Navy will move my things from SLC to Pcola, its more on whether I want to deal with all my things. But I guess I might as well and just put it in storage if I end up staying at the BOQ. Is this the best option? I see what your saying with not buying new things.

If you can't put it in your car, you can do without it until you get your first duty station. All the furniture and accesories are there for the taking and cheap by guys who have figured out they can't take it with them.
Get used to it. You are going to learn how to cut to the bone and leave shit behind no matter how painful.

Lets try again. You already know moving stuff is a hassle. *Unless its really expensive, or a family hand down, get rid of it! If you factor in the cost of storage against the cost of buying nearly new/used from someone who spent money they couldn't afford and can't move it so have to dump it cheap.....yadda yadda.
Like I said in another post, if you can't carry it in your car you don't need it until you get to a PDS and even then, how long you gonna be there? For the young guys who lust to be a naval aviator, this is a very demanding profession and does not lend itself to married life, or family life. If you chose to do it, expect sacrifice. If you chose to marry and raise a family, you better make a decision early on which is more important. Are you going to be concerned about moving furniture and goods, or are you going to be concerned about someone shooting your ass down?

They're telling people it's okay to sign leases off base here, but some people are hesitant. I know a couple people are waiting for our big check-in and PSD briefs before signing anything. A couple of us are in the Q under the impression that this is temporary (a few weeks to a month, tops). I suggest you store your stuff at a convenient location, get here with a reservation at the Q for a week or two, and once you're all checked in sign a lease.
