I am packing to move and thought I would share a bit of research.
For example, here are the prices for 140 sheets of newspaper packing material (before taxes).

Penske - $12.99
Uhaul - $8.80
Walmart - $4.40

http://www.usedcardboardboxes.com was the cheapest source for the boxes that I could find. It should work well for those of you that don't have an apartment complex with recycling facilities to browse through.

Hope this helps more cash appear in your pocket after PCS moves!

Craigslist: $0.00

Depending where you live, there's almost always someone giving away packing materials (boxes, etc.). They go fast, but if you start early and check often, you can probably get some.

Not to be wasteful, but if you absolutely can't get around paying for the stuff, don't worry about it. Just put it down as part of your claim and get reimbursed for it.

Many places still do not use this website, and quite often there is more stuff to be packed than there are free boxes. Hence the price breakdown for those that have to pay for it.

$ 0.75 cents to get the paper machine in the morning = 20 papers x 14 pages= 280 sheets!:icon_tong

Okay, not ethical, I know. If you check out base housing, find the U-Haul truck that is being unloaded and those guys usually have lots of boxes and paper. When I PCS-ed to Corpus I literally filled the back of my F150 with flattened boxes and both MY trash can and the neighbors with that tan paper packing they use.

What about all those old on-base newspapers they can't give away? I see plently of those here in K-rock.

Even if your area doens't have Craigslist, you can often find boxes listed in local sales sources (newspaper, Pennysaver, or whatever source is commonly used for selling used items). If they aren't free, they are almost always cheaper than buying new.

Freecycle is alos a great resource for free, recycled moving materials.

Proud wife and mama!
If you frequent a Starbucks, just ask them when they get their orders and show up that day for the empty boxes. Their coffee boxes are a great size for packing and moving, and they are really durable.. Since I used to work there we've used their boxes for every move.

Actually, that's a good point. I think Walmart gets rid of their boxes around midnight or so (probably depends on the location). I've asked about it and they said if I showed up when they were disposing of them I could take them.

I am moving locally. My lease is up and I got a nice letter from the property management company that stated something similar to "We've checked the market, and property values are going up!". It came along with the new lease quote of $300 more a month. I wonder if they are looking out the window at the same economy I am.
