I will be graduating TBS soon and getting orders to Pensacola. Is it smart to go ahead and look for/secure an apartment or should I wait until I know more details? In a related topic... how long should I realistically expect to remain in Pensacola?

I would definitely look into a place ASAP. If you are single, find some buddies and get into a house somewhere in Pace, which is much closer to Milton than to NAS P'cola, but you are only in API for a little bit anyhow. If married and can afford to rent a house, do so, if not, then get into some of the apartment complexes like Gov's Gate or Eaton Square. These are expensive, but the best apartments you will get. Also, the base housing isn't bad at all and its a good community. If I had to do it again, I would have lived there. The closer you live to Milton, the more money you will save, but then its more of a haul to get to town. I lived right by the Pensacola Airport and it took me 45 minutes to commute to Whiting one way, but I was near everything in town. The commute from the 'Gate is like 30-35 min. Hope this helps.

If you want to move as little as possible, I'd recommend to live in the Pace/Milton area. It's a bit of a commute to API (1 hr each way), but API is such a short period. It will make for an easy commute for primary, which you will be at much longer anyway.

If youa re single live i Northern Pcola. Kinda splits the difference close to NAS, Whiting and the BARS. There are some really nice appartment complexes there too.

Yeah, I'm gonna have to second skid's bit on the bars. It takes me awhile to drive to work, but the bars are just around the corner and there's a bit more variety when it comes to food choices for those nights when you're far too lazy to cook (also known as most nights).

If anyone is still checking this thread.... So is it basically a given that I'll be sent somewhere besides Pcola after Primary? And if not, any way to increase your chances of staying there?

No its not a given. You'll either go to Whiting or Corpus, chances are Whiting unless you request Corpus, as there are 3 primary squadrons at Whiting. When you check in for API you tell them which TRAWING you want to go to, and everyone in my class who reuqested Whiting went there.

If you're an SNA and you know you're going to Whiting for Primary, you should expect to spend a total of about 9-10 months here. After Primary, if you select helos you'll stay at Whiting for another 6-7(?) months, then go to an FRS somewhere else. If you select anything other than helos, you're outta here after Primary.

Milton is just plain dumpier, more backwoods than the town of Pensacola. There are other complexes in Pensacola I have heard of guys living in, like near the airport there are a few places. I lived in Tanglewood Apartments, they were the cheapest we could find rent-wise at the time, but with lots of college age tenants, the places were kind of beat up and there were some interesting weekends. Quite a few flight students live there. There is a few places off of Davis highway, one is called Colonial at Oakleigh and they have nice big places but the rent is kinda high. There is another complex right across from Colonial at Oakleigh but I forgot the name. Also, there is a few complexes on Olive Rd that are pretty nice, but the names escape me sorry. All of these places are in northeast Pensacola and essentially split the drive between NASP and NASWF. And they are close to a couple of good bars and plenty of places to eat. Milton is a dry county and there isn't a decent restaurant up there.

Ok... no one yell at me... I worry alot... Is there any way I would get down to Pensacola and be told that there is no way I can live off base, that I have to stay in the BOQ and cant draw BAH? I am single if that makes a difference.

Most of the time folks are worried about what to study at API, or what are their chances of getting jets.

I agree with KBayDog on this one, Pace/Milton area isn't too bad. Yeah it's a long drive to API but that's only for 6 weeks, primary and 'possibly' advanced is going to be 6-8 months apiece. Guys will argue that living in Pcola is better because that's were """the action""" is, closer to bars, beachs, pets mart..etc etc To each their own. Personally, I didn't mind sacrificing the 20-30 minute drive into Pcola on the weekends for a 10-15 minute drive into work. Especially for the 0530 briefs.

Oh and KBayDog, I think you're an OK dude, I don't care what they've been saying about you in the chat room....
