RANDOM THOUGHT: Seems like you can't see a movie that has anything to do with Vietnam without hearing something by Skynyrd...Just happened to me again, (and while I'm thynkyng about it, the shot of a Huey landing with "Sweet Home Alabama" playing is forever etched into my head--just can't remember what movie that was)...Just got me thinking, in upcoming flicks about OIF and OEF, for the guys that have been there, what tunes would make the soundtrack?

Why would you automatically associate a song from 1974 with a conflict that, for the most part, ended in 1972?

Interesting that you chose Sweet Home Alabama instead of the massively overused "Fortunate Son" by CCR. Don't get me wrong, CCR rocks, but damn near every vietnam movie features it.

My thoughts exactly...

lets not forget 'Run through the Jungle' and 'Paint it Black'. I would say that 'Out of My Way' by Seether has become a pretty good theme song... for Marines anyway

*cough* All Along The Watchtower *cough* seems to be a ever present Vietnam movie.

"Run through the Jungle" is another one that you commonly hear at any point in a movie where the main characters are riding in a Huey. CCR is pretty much the definitive Vietnam Movie Soundtrack song.

Ask me about ninjas!
I'll have to second CCR as the definitive Vietnam/Huey band. In simpler times, I got to ride left seat with an HMLA CO for about an hour. We took a quick tour of Pendleton from the air, while the crew chief in the back blasted CCR through a handy little box that plugged into the ICS. Things never seemed more right.

But how do I get speakers rigged on the outside of my bird to blast tunes to my enemies?

Is there room to stow a Surf Board on the Phrog/Osprey without it getting in the way? :icon_smil

HA! Yeah, CCR--can't believe I didn't think of em either. I've had "...I ain't no senator's son..." running through my head since I checked this earlier. Squeeze--guess the producer dropped the ball on the '74 "Sweet Home Alabama". I know it was shown all in flashbacks--the Huey landing, student protests, race riots--all with "SHA"...Not being able to remember what movie that was is gonna be a brain-sliver all day...

Could the movie your thinking of be one of the "60's" or "70's" television movies that was realeased on the networks?? I remember those series being on and being a collage of different imagery, it is possible that they put it together without thinking of when the song was released, cuz in Forrest Gump the music is pretty chronological!

Funny ... I was just thinking (?) about this stuff yesterday.

Songs, Vietnam, that time-frame, I mean. I think a lot of the "hard-rock", protest songs of the era and images of Vietnam have stuck with us and become almost a caricature of the time --- because moviemakers can't get over their conviction that we were a bunch of stoned-out, trigger-happy, wild-eyed William Calley baby-killers.

"Peace Train" was a biggie ... don't ask me why.

We used to sit by the O' Club pool in Kingsville as STUDs watching the Texas sun go down, drinking beer and singing "Sweet Baby James" ... :) ... over and over. Many of us were gettin' closer and closer to going to the RAG's and then ... to war (?) --- and getting more and more scared, even though no one would ever admit it ... :)

When we came home from one of the cruises --- some bright soul on the welcoming committe had "Yellow River" going over and over on the hangar speakers --- I guess the "committee" thought we would appreciate the "message" ... ???:

"So long, boy you can take my place
I've got my papers, I've got my pay
So pack my bags and I'll be on my way
To Yellow River

Put my gun down, the war is won
Fill my glass high, the time has come
I'm going back to the place that I love
Yellow River .... " and so on ....

When we would put out to sea, one of the ship's CO's would put "Octopus Garden" or "Sea of Heartbreak" on the ship's announcing system for 10-15 minutes. Just to get us in the "mood" for the line period.

...."The lights In the harbor
Don't shine for me
I'm like a lost ship adrift on the sea
Sea of heartbreak..."

That was his thing --- and for a while it became "our" thing. I always think of those days any time I hear either tune ... :)
