Barnard, I'm with you. The reason I chose the corps was so that I could not only be an aviator but to spend time as infantry as well. If I wanted to be only a pilot I could have just gone to the Navy. And many who chose the Navy do it because they don't want to go ground. It's just a matter of preference. So in terms of b-billets I'm interested in what other options I will have when I have my turn to serve on the ground.

Yeah, I want to know that too. Was he NPQ'd or did he do something?

"Push the stick foward, the houses get bigger; pull back, the houses get smaller... unless you keep pulling back, then they get bigger again."

I am that friend that jcrens was talking about, so I'll shed some light-- I was, in fact, NPQed, right before my commissioning. I just got a call from my OSO saying that NAMI didn't like some things in my medical past, and that I could never get a waiver. Then he said "Well, I understand if you don't want your commission, but would you still take a commission with a ground contract"... Needless to say I already knew my answer before he completed the question. Having an air contract is a cool thing, but it isn't the only thing.

Some people said that you don't have a ground job in the Air Force, but this isn't true. AF guys don't just hop in their planes every day and fly, then grab some brews at the O club and go home. You'll bust your ass in the Air Force too... Unless your the most junior Lt., you will have more responsibilities than flying.

AF guys also do get rotated through ground jobs a lot as well. Some more than others. It's just the luck of the draw sometimes. However, I would say that in AF, the "marine first, pilot second" doesn't hold up as well.

Taxman, Why wouldn't they figure this out before they offer you a slot at OCS with an aviation contract? I want to wear the EGA first and foremost, but damn....

damn taxman, i feel for you, i hope that doesn't happen to me, NAMI initially made me get a waiver for a TINY TINY cornea scar that was out of my line of vision, and they approved the waiver, i'm hoping i don't get the Nami Whammy, if i did, then i wouldn't even get to choose my MOS, they would just put me somewhere, not that i mind a ground job, lets hope eating all these vitamins and carrots help.

And ANYONE considering becoming a Marine should be ready to do just that, Marine first, Officer Second, Pilot Third...

how long is the pilot contract for marines?

soo basically you will finish training fly for 2-4 years then get sent to some job like FAC ( could anyone tell me what they do) What are the chances of getting a job such as a flight instructor? Seems all i hear is that they get sent to FAC

You will do some other job after about 4 yrs in a fleet squadron. I would say that less than 50% go FAC (Forward Air Controller). You have to be ready to get a FAC tour, but unless you're a bottom-feeder or pissed off your command, you'll probably have some choice as to what you do. Some people dig the FAC thing, others don't. Flt school is not that difficult to get, either with or w/o FAC experience.

I'm sorry if this is a dumb question but what does a Foward air controller do?

I'm between AF and marines. Everytime i decide (in my head) i want to go Air force something inside me bugs me sort of like i'm cheating or something. I know AF officer training is not the hardest in the world. When i decide marines i love the idea of earning it and testing myself, but then i'm not sure if being an infantry man would be something i'd like to do.

I dont know if being on the ground with the grunts is for me do you guys think when i go through OCS in college I will be able to make a proper decision if being a marine is for me or not?

Also i get sea sick .....will that be a problem? (I've done acro in airplanes plenty of times and i have not gotten sick) but i know as a marine i will spend some time on ships.

I'm sorry for treading on the grounds of the other post about B-Billets, but I am going to do it anyways. I am tied between choosing Aviation MOS or Infantry MOS but because of the flight contract before I graduate, it gives me a kind of "security", as much as there can be in life, to know what I will be going into after TBS instead of waiting for the selection officer to put me into something that I will not like as much. The main point of my wordy message is, "How likely is a pilot to get a B-Billet as a FAC if they request it?" I would like the chance to fly and to do grunt work. I heard, however highly unlikely, that sometimes, 2nd Lt's awaiting Flight School can get a chance to go through OIC, which would be ideal for me. I would appreciate some comments and/or replies to these statements. Thank you.

Man, this FAC/B-billet stuff is getting crazy. It must be the most talked about subject on this forum! For people that haven't been accepted to OCS yet, do you know how much you'll change by the time you have to pick your b-billet? Don't worry about it yet!
By the way x-wing, you don't do acrobatics in airplanes, you do aerobatics.

You will have no problem getting a FAC job if you WANT it. One of your buddies will be breathing a sigh of relief.

Well, by definition: acrobatics = men in tights. And there are some that turn their flight suit into spandex!

When the AF goes to the field, they play Frisbee (hence officer training school vs. officer candidate school). When the Marines go to the field, many second guess the whole ground MOS thing, others still love the misery! (M)arines begins with a capital M.

Hope this helps, and if you think I’m joking about the Frisbee thing then ask some AF people. The object of the game isn’t even to win, but to follow the rules.

I dont know i like the idea of a challenge i feel that the af wont challenge me physically.
I know the Marines guarantee a pilot slot from college how do you get into that program.
