My Chances - USMC Aviator?

Hi All,

I'm waiting to get 2 cavities filled so I can pass my physical for my SNA package. Just turned 27 and am applying for the winter OCS since the Aviator slots for October were snatched up early. AS such, I'm applying with an age waiver. Here are my stats:

astb 5/6/7 (first attempt)
pft 300 (14:50 run - I'm a big runner)
vision 20/20
have private pilots license since i was 19
height weight etc average - 145lbs, 5'10"
Age - Just over 27.5 at time of commissioning (assuming I make it)

Not sure if any of you would have inside knowledge of what convening boards look at, but any guesses? I could study a lot and probably up my score on astb, but my OSO said don't worry about it, I passed and that's the main thing, and they look at the most recent test so if I were to somehow fail the next one, not good. anyway, thoughts? much appreciated...

Your stats look good. You didn't include your GPA or LOR's so I can't speak to those. If you really want to be sure, study and bump that ASTB. A higher score WILL increase your chances. You've got a $hithot PFT and that is really important. Age waivers have been sticky in the past...but your OSO will know more about that than me.

Nobody knows why the board decides how they do. I personally think it's a magic 8 ball or dart board. The one thing that seems to stand true is the earlier you apply, the better your chances.

If at first you don't succeed: apply, apply again.

ASTB is fine. The boards will only look to see that you passed, or at least that was the word from my old OSO. PFT score is where you make your money.

Good to hear

Wow - Cool forum, lots of quick replies. Thanks for all the feedback. GPA was 2.78 - not great by any means but was a pretty good school. I studied ethnobotany. never heard of it, right?! long story. well, anyway I'm sort of in the waiting phase, doing everything i can to max my chances, and I appreciate all the feedback. My OSO has been fantastic. thanks again.........

never would have thought the Corps would be in need of pilots. How come? Can't find enough or they drop out too fast or what? Is the same true for the Navy? When I talked to Navy guys over a year ago they said something like don't bother - they're booked two years in advance. Oh they also said if my GPA isn't at least a 3.5 they don't even look at you. different standards with Marines or what? I've heard Marines look more at the whole person - is that true? I came back for a second talk and the Navy guys were out to lunch, but the Marine recruiter started chatting with me and here I am now! but yeah - whats up with the Navy vs. Marines and the need for pilots? Hope this doesn't start some Navy vs Marines thread, but honestly is there a difference? doesn't everyone and their brother want to be a "fighter pilot" when they grow up?!
