Phew. Ok, you just sparked a long intense search of FAR/AIM and FAA medical forums. I didn't want to suddenly find out I've been in violation of FAA 121 rules for the last two years. ;-)
Hence part of the potential problem. You may have a 0% rating (which basically means there is no current problem), but then have to jump through hoops to prove it isn't a problem because there's no existing paperwork saying there isn't a problem.
Sounds like I may need to start calling in January, just in case something gets more complicated before my May expiration. Annoying.
Even if there is paperwork it is important to remember that the VA is compensating you for the future (shortened lifespan, pain and suffering, loss of work...). The FAA is looking at the now. Even with good VA paperwork explaining causes, treatments, and outcomes the FAA has asked me to take certain medical tests to show I’m good for now. PTSD is the worse. The FAA has no way to evaluate it unless you are taking meds. In a case like this you are going to see a HIMS to get your medical.
