Looks like a standard front sight assembly that has been ground down. That's about as slim and bomb proof as it gets.
That's what I'd do. Just pop it in a vice and have at it. Throw a little cold blue on it and be done with it. There are tons of YouTube how to's out there.
SF Groups and the Regiment both fall under USASOC, who falls under SOCOM. I daresay neither is a bellwether for Big Army or Big DoD in general. Transitioning all the SOCOM units to the G19 probably saved some J4 or J8 guy at MacDill a nice chunk of change in some line item in his budget, what with being standardized and all. But there's a difference between PFC Schmuckatelli in the 82nd Airborne, and someone who's passed BUD/S, RAST, or SF selection.
