Just a little confused here, but won't the Corps let you change aircraft if they need someone to fly the particular aircraft you want to change to? I ask because isn't it cheaper to train someone who is already a pilot in a new airframe, if a pilot is needed, rather than train a total newbie for it? Also, I have read of people who changed, so I am confused.

No. Never. Doesn't happen. Back in the old days, it wasn't unusual, but it's pretty much unheard of now.

Unless they phase your aircraft out, your chances of switching aircraft on active duty are jack crap, and jack just left town. The obvious exception is the Osprey program, which solicits applicants from all T/M/S. It's easier to switch from helo to jet (which ain't easy either) than to switch 46 to Cobra (sorry).

As someone stated earlier, you might be able to switch in the reserves, but that's it.

At least your new station will be nice.Everyone I talked to love Okinawa.
Oki does kick ass, but the hot season can be kind of painful. Great Indian food, beaches and SCUBA. It's kind of Japan's version of Hawaii. Awesome airspace too.
