Look at the VAQ world. They gotta send their folks everywhere from Whidbey (except Japan of course).

Oceana and greater issues of infrastructure

The more things change eh? Kingsville has major issues even if NAS Kingsville doesn't. Making it a MJB would put what....10000 folks there? Kingsville has the lousiest housing stock of any place I've been stationed and the "nice, taking the wife out restaurant" is Chili's.:(

Well, therein lies the rub and its a double edged sword with several other issues attendant:

Moving so many squadrons and the supporting units means a lot of familes uprooted and few if any locations have housing* ready to absorb the influx, but that is a huge reason so many states/municipalities are anxious to grab the prize. They get huge infusion of federal money to prepare for move and the tax base and development to support all the people arriving is a City Council's wet dream while it is a nightmare for service member trying to find housing and decent schools (the two sides of the sword, sort of).

And it causes a second situation that is another stress factor on families, but helps the local politicians bent on bringing in the bacon for their local populace and developers: constant influx and efflux of people. Since locations suggested so far are fairly away from existing shore establishments, you can bet sea to shore (and vice versa) rotations will result in moves that further help local developers (and real estate folks). Although this occurs regularly at Whidbey and Lemoore, there is so much shore establishment in the Tidewater area including Joint assignments, it is not unusual to roll through several assignments and not have to move. This helps families put down roots and not lose money when real estate market is soft (situation in Tidewater for decades) and saves the Navy big money by not having to move so many people. DC is so close that many folks even have families stay put when it comes time to roll into a Pentagon or DC area job.

*it's not just housing as Scoober noted; it's schools (huge response time to absorb and increase school capacity and quality) and other things like restaurants and retail establishments that are lacking

Sure, but Disneyland used to be in the middle of nowhere. You add 10,000 people, and opportunists will build the restaurants, entertainment, etc.

Well, families come from all over the world to go to Disneyland........I am not thinking a Master Jet Base is going to be high on many families' vacation plans, except for ones already on this board or otherwise connected to the military......;)

Just look at Fallon, Top Gun came and look at it now.......that place is still a shithole.......

I "heard a rumor" that three Super squadrons were moving from NTU to Cherry Point in 2008. Specifically named three, I'll leave it at that.
