The USCGC Taney, a museum ship in Baltimore's Inner Harbor.

http://www.hnsa.org/ships/taney.htm
GOOD JOB, Flash ... Taney's class was actually something of a "pocket" destroyer or early DE before the DE type was conceived ... their early armament was complete with 5" 51-cal main mounts and a seaplane --- and they served with the Navy in WW2 and afterwards --- I think Taney served in Vietnam as well.

But there's still "more" ... from Pear Harbor.

And if memory serves, USCGC Taney was one of the ships participating in the search for Amelia Earhart ... the original subject of this thread.

USS Hoga, a PH yard fire boat was to be moved to Little Rock Arkansas but not sure what has happend to it. "They" say it is still out there afloat but not in Little Rock, if not, then where?

Coast Guard, well ok, almost Navy. The Army AAC boat I was thinking of was an AVR. Think I may still be around, maybe in Japan, still owned by Air Force. Yokohama Yatch Club maybe.

I rest, that is all I can come up with.

GOOD JOB, Master Chief!!!

And one more ... another tug ... USS NOKOMIS .... :) ... gotta love those Indian-named tugs. I "think" some people and the owner are still trying to get the NOKOMIS to Pearl ever since the USS MISSOURI kinda sucked all the $$$ air out of the possibility of moving the HOGA to Pearl ... so Arkansas (?) politicians finally managed to "get" it from the Navy. It's being appealed (I think she's still in SFO Bay ?) as we speak as "purists" want the HOGA where she belongs ... i.e., Pear Harbor.

USS HOGA (right in historic picture) on the line @ Battleship Row, December 7, 1941 ...

No, young fool. NOT NALCOMIS, i.e., Naval Aviation Logistics Command Management Information System ... and that's a mouthful.

But: NOKOMIS ... i.e., like Minnesota??? :)

1st picture: USS NOKOMIS, YT-142 in Pearl Harbor @ 1943
2nd picture: USS HOGA, YT-146 in Pearl Harbor 1943 (the tug in foreground -- note wreckage of USS ARIZONA next to Ford Island left of DD mast in center background)

USS Hoga is still in Suisun Bay, CA, along with about 80 other ships of the "Ghost Fleet".
I remember seeing that "Fleet" from the air @ 30-40 years ago while passing north/south across the Bay --- I'm gonna say hundreds -- no joke --- hundreds of ships resided there during the '60's and 70's ...

Yes, early '70's,, Project 702 took the Navy from "about" 1,500 ships to a target of 702, hence project name. Lot of them ended up in Suisun Bay. Understand the number is now down to about 80 or so. Think Glomar Explorer is there rusting away. Know the USS Iowa is there, think only BB left in the stack.

USS Hopper (DDG 70)anyone? Namesake ADM Grace Hopper. She was a legend in her field. Put the Navy on the digital map as it were. Before her time, a real trailblazer. Any other ships named after female Admirals?

USS Higbee, DDR, Lena (?) Higbee was Chief of Nurses.

Thought Grace Hopper retired as a Commodore?

The Hopper also had the biggest group of wardroom cuties on the seawall during my time there. I believe they were referred to as the "Hoppettes." Yet another piece of Navy trivia for you all.

A Google Earth shot of Suisun Bay, with the USS Iowa in the middle... and another with a closeup shot of the Iowa.
