A number of defense industry blogs are predicting announcements this week if that means anything.Between this and the FA-XX timeline slip there’s an even chance the next fighter won’t have a squishy human brain in it to worry about.
Big if true …A number of defense industry blogs are predicting announcements this week if that means anything.
That was SecNav Ray Mabus. He wanted the FA-XX to be unmanned. Many years ago I seem to remember the "Navy" saying the F-35 would be the last manned fighter it buys. I can't attribute the comment to anyone in particular. Maybe some smart guy here can track it down. Noted at that time was AF silence on that prediction.

That was about as aspirational as the Great Green Fleet cluster fuck he put everyone through. Five years ago, when we were having serious talks about requirements for F/A-XX (the Navy was calling it NGAD at the time), the conventional wisdom was that it would be optionally manned. I think that idea has largely fallen by the wayside in favor of the unmanned "Loyal Wingman" concept, or whatever that has morphed into now. That was SecNav Ray Mabus.
